Hi,

People "above me" are considering both Avaya and Nortel PBX systems. Of course I'd prefer Nortel.

If possible, could someone who is used to pricing new systems give me a ballpark price on a new Option 81C, or CS1000, or whatever they're calling them this week. (And it can be a pretty big ballpark.)

The system would need CallPilot, probably five or six PRIs and around 500 phones, roughly 80% digital 20% analog.

That's about all I was given to go on, so I realize that a guess can't be too accurate.

But hopefully it could give us a starting point.

Thanks, sorry about the strange request.

different vendors will be able to give you wildly different prices.

i would seriously suggest sitting down with the higher ups and nailing down the specifics a bit closer and then inviting multiple vendors in (at the same time is good so they know who their competition is) to discuss needs and have them provide a preliminary quotation. Narrow it down from those and then get serious.

good luck.

Thanks for the responses.

I know it was a goofy question but I think the "higher-ups" were just trying to see if one switch was "gobs less" than the other. I think (especially with the inexact guesses), they're not going to see a clear difference in price. (But for what it's worth, I think they're happy with what they got.)

Thanks again.

RFP's are FREE and you get exact pricing.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

We'll be needing a new switch soon also in a brand new building. A question I have for you is "Why an 81 rather than a 61?" and "Should I think about an 81 instead of a 61, which is what we have now?

It all depends on the amount of Common Equipment Network space you'll need. I would say a 61c would work in the cse mentioned above. And, it can always be upgraded to an 81c in the future.

your answers depends on how many people/stations and trunks/t1/pri.

a 61C (CS1KM SG) only has 1 full network group (32 loop: 0-31) whereas on a 81C (CS1KM MG) you can have up to 7 network group.

Thanks, yykroon. That will be important for us to consider as our number of loops could grow. But, if we can always go from 61 to 81 in the future, as scott29 says, we can go that route also.

sorry, that should be 8 network group on a 81C (0-7) and yes you can always upgrade, but i find that to be a pain in the rear at times

Thanks for the comments.

We ended up getting a pretty good idea with about seven ballpark quotes, (which seemed to make the people happy who wanted them).

The quotes were probably worthless, but they were cheaper than the Avaya equipment, which suits me fine.

Now if they ever decide to buy a new switch they'll have to get real quotes anyway.

Thanks again.
