Hello, i've had the following backweb problem for sometime now and tried many different spyware programs to try and solve the problem but have had no luck. This is the message i get when i boot up each time:

Invalid backweb application id 1940576

And these are the spyware programs i've tried:

Spybot search and destroy
Ad-aware SE
Spy subtract
Windows defender

Can anyone offer any advice on this problem?
Thank you.

Download hijack this from the link below. Please do this. Click here:

to download HijackThis. Click scan and save a logfile, then post it here so
we can take a look at it for you. Don't click fix on anything in hijack this
as most of the files are legitimate.

Try going to:

Start>Run>type "msconfig" and hit enter>goto "Startup">Scroll down and find the Backweb Agent and untick the box> Click Apply/Ok>Restart the computer and see if it helps

*Note: Backweb is an unneccessary program provided by HP/Compaq that sends information from your computer to the HP Centre. Some may consider this spyware and seeing as it has no effect on your computer whatsoever, it is safe to disable from the Startup options.

Googling also turned this comment up a couple of times:

Backweb is an application used by a variety of software for auto-updating and is also used by Compaq. As already mentioned, it is probably a left over registry entry after the program was removed.

To remove it:
Start | Run | enter regedit. Go Edit | Find > 1940576.exe

Then delete that key. As always, be careful when editing the registry.

Ok heres my saved file from the Hyjackthis scan.

I see backweb is associated with compaq and so is safe! You can try disabling in msconfig!

I would get rid of windows defender and get something more robust like spyware terminator which has real time protection and is free!

I'm not quite sure how good comodo anti virus is, I would suggest sticking with either anti vir, AVG or Avast, the first being said to be the best.

free anti-virus tools

AVG7 from

Anti-vir

Avast 4 from

have hijack this fix these entries. close all browsers and programmes before
clicking FIX.

Here's some free tools to keep you from getting infected in the future.

To stop reinfection get spywareblaster from

get the hosts file from here.Unzip it to a folder!

put it into : or click the mvps bat and it should do it for you!

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

ie-spyad.Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected

when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Spyware Terminator

In spyware terminator, click real time protection and tick the box to use
real time protection and tick all the boxes except file exceptions shield.
If your confident in using its advanced feature, click advanced and tick
the HIPS box.

If you want to install and uninstall programs it is best to
temporarily disable Spyware terminator and then re-enable it after you
have installed or uninstalled a program as it will create a lot of pop ups asking you do you wish this to happen!

Right click spyware terminator on the bottom right of your status bar and
choose exit. Then tick the box and that is spyware terminator disabled!

Arovaxshield Protect against hijackers etc!

Use spybot's immunize button and use spywareblaster' enable
protection once you update it. you can put spybot's hosts file into
your own and lock it.

I would also suggest switching to Mozilla's firefox browser, it's safer, has
a built in pop up blocker, blocks cookies and adds. Mozilla Thunderbird is also a good
e-mail client.

Another good and free browser is Opera!

pechenegs: I notice that the spywareterminator website is offline, it is possible to find a third party download site, but are you sure this one is legit?
