I have installed all the components neccesary to backup my exchange server...the problem is that the backupexec software can NOT see the information store??? and when it tries to back it up I get an error <<Item can not be accesed>>
I have installed the exchange agent on my exchange server.
I have installed the client on the media server .
I have created an account for the backupexec on the exchange
I have installed the administration software on the media server.

You don't say anything about installing the Remote Agent. Do you have that installed?

-SQLBill

I work on a lot of client networks using Backup Exec and have never heard of the error 'Item cannot be accessed' is this the exact error?? I doubt it. I have heard of 'Item not found' and 'access denied'. Put the job log in your post.

To backup Exchange 5.5 IS. You have to have Exchange Administrator installed on the Backup Exec server and service packed with the same Exchange service pack that is applied on the Exchange server. This is to ensure that the Exchange Administrator .dll files are the same version as the ones on the Exchange server.

Next, you would need the Agent for MS-Exchange to show up in Help|About Backup Exec. Then in Tools|Options|Exchange tab you would need the checkbox 'Enable Exchange Support' checked.

Next, as SQLBill stated, you need the Remote Agent installed on the Exchange server.

If after all above and BE still cannot bkup the IS.... I would check if the Exch srvr is in the same domain. Is the Backup Exec services account a member of Administrators and Domain Admins groups? Within Exchange Administrator have you delegated control to the Backup Exec services account as Service Account Admin or Admin.

Finally, if after everything above BE stiiilllll cannot bkup the IS and assuming that both servers are Windows 2000:
-On the Backup Exec server running Windows 2000:
1. Close Backup Exec(BE) and stop all BE services.
2. Open registry, HKLM/Software/Veritas/Backup Exec/Engine/NTFS, doubleclick Restrict Anonymous Support and change the value from 0-->1.
3. Create a new DWORD in the NTFS key called useAdSSCheck with value of 0.
4. Close registry editor and start BE services.
-On the Exchange server running Windows 2000:
1. Stop the Backup Exec Remote Agent for NT/2000 service.
2. Follow step 2 above.
3. Start the Backup Exec Remote Agent for NT/2000 service.

See now if you can bkup the IS.

Good luck.

One thing to make sure is that the file EDBBCLI.DLL is the same on both the backup and exchange server (ie. both have had the same updates applied).

check in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 for the file, and make sure they are the same. if not, just copy the new one over the old one

Thank you for your help
Tha agent that is showing up in the BE Help-->about
is for exchange 2000 and I am runing 5.5 does it make a difference??
After all the above when I go to my exchange server under the BE selection I see my IS and DS but when I click on them it says no selection exist and I can see all my mailboxes but the size is 0kb for all of them.

I am running the BE and the exchange on NT servers.

It is normal for BE to show 0 bytes for mailboxes. The mailbox sizes change constantly, BE doesn't keep track of that. Suffice it to say you will still be able to back them up.
As for the "no selection exists" message, this also is normal, due to the fact, that Backup Exec for Windows NT backs up Microsoft Exchange as a data stream and not the individual files.

Your Agent for MS-Exchange 2000 is backwards compatible w/Exch 5.5.

Dude, select the IS and DS and run a backup. Then post the job log in a post. I think you have everything configured correctly.
Honestly, if you cannot get a backup to work with all the different replies to your original post, maybe you need to test a backup with NTBackup on the Exchange server itself. If NTBackup cannot back up your IS & DS then there may be something wrong with your Exchange server.

Good luck!

Again thanx for your help.

Have you sat down with your network/system admin(s)? Maybe, there's a firewall or something else blocking your access. Although, if you were able to install the software, that SHOULDN'T be a problem, but you never know.

I once heard of a person who's scheduled evening backup would fail. They finally (after days of trying to solve it) talked to their network/sys admin and found that the network/sys admin had a job that took the network offline at the time the backups were scheduled. Seems the network/sys admin scheduled a job at that time also.

-SQLBill

unfurtunatly I am the sys admin.... :)

and there is no problem with the network because I have a dedicated Nic card for internal network....and even more both my BE server and exchange are on the same side of the firewall....

Since you are the sys admin, what happens when you PING the Exchange server from the BE server?

-SQLBill

there is no problem pinging and I have no problems backing up other files or folders on the exchange server...its just the IS DS and mailboxes that give me the error...

> you would need the checkbox 'Enable Exchange Support' checked.

Qdog,
Just wanted to thank you. That little blurb above saved me a LOT of aggravation.

-gbiello

It is checked and the setting is for full backup

G'day Guys

I am running Win2k with BUE8.6 Build 3878 and am backing up Exchange 5.5

I am having the same problems as A15.

Access is denied and the service acct is a member of the domain admins..
