Hi Gurus,
has anybody experience with NDMP/SnapImage based backup?
Our Server configuration is E250/Sol8/SBU6.1.2/L700/IBM LTO FC - NetApp F810. We like to do an "remote Backup" so that the NW-Server acts as a "Tape-Server" for the NetApp. Configuration seems to be a little difficult...

Hi ManfredSchilling:
SnapImage will handle this. Configuration is not all that difficult.

1. What version of NetWorker and SnapImage are you running?

2. What version of NetApp DataOnTAP are you running?

Configuration of NDMP devices on Solaris or HP (using SnapImage) is not much different than configuration of any tape device on same servers.

Example:
(1st. assure that ndmp is running (ask if you have problems with this)

Jukeboxes/drives=-=-=-=-=-=
For robotics handle(on Solaris SnapImage host): handle is typically rsjb0 <-(zero)or rsjb1, etc...

For NDMP tape devices /dev/rmt/0cbn (solaris example).

=-=-=-=-Stand-alone tape
If configuring a stand-alone NDMP tape device, "create" the device as rd=<SnapImage_hostname or IP>:/dev/rmt/0cbn. If using jbconfig (to configure jukebox and drives), the rd=* part of the handle will be entered for you. When prompted for drive handles during jbconfig just give it "/dev/rmt/0cbn".

SnapImage works well with NDMP Filers (NetApp, EMC, etc.). SnapImage also gives you local block level backup "Celestra backup" (very fast).

As you may already know, the problem with NDMP remote configuration will be the passing of the backup/restore data over the LAN, as opposed to a locally attached (local to the NetApp) SCSI devices.

If you have any specific questions about failure to config, ask away.

Hi LukerCodi,

our OnTAP Version is 6.2.1. Trouble starts with pkgadd under Solaris:
The following packages are available:
1 LGTOcmo Celestra Module for Oracle
(sparc) celestra_1_6.Build.88
2 LGTOnddrv Ndmpd Scsi Passthru Driver
(sparc) celestra_1_6.Build.88
3 LGTOndmpd Ndmp Server
(sparc) celestra_1_6.Build.88
4 LGTOwidrv Write Intercepter Driver
(sparc) celestra_1_6.Build.88

we suggested only LGTOndmpd is required. We've stopped installation, because it tried to overwrite /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/services. We can't find any docu...

You will have to install components 2,3,4 to have snapimage operational.
As regarding to changing files, it should not be harmfull...
To be on the safe side you can make a copy of both files prior to the install and make a diff between the original ones and the new/updated ones.
As for docomentation you can find it on Legato's web site at:
