About a month ago our Backup Exec 9.1 started acting very weird. First we starting getting a script error upon opening BEXEC. Now it sees all new media as CLEANING MEDIA (which it is not). I cannot format the media since the option for FORMAT is grayed out.

We are using an Exabyte 10 tape autoloader (VXA-2)with one tape drive. The media is the V.23 80/160GB VXA-2 Tape format. No matter what I try I cannot get it to format the tapes. I hope that by formatting the darn backups will start working again. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Texman

Sound like a hardware issue. When it read them as cleaning media it means the read head can detect the header on the tape.

Clean the drive
Update the SCSI card driver
Update to latest Backup Exec drivers

I take it I will have to re-inventory the tapes, correct?

Thanks,

Tom

WEll if they are showing up as cleaning yes you would need to re-enventory.
If you get the same results then contact you hardware vendor

Actually it is the Backup Exec software. Since we do not have the license numbers anymore for the BUEX software we have to upgrade since the Tape drive sees the newer tapes, but BUEX cannot. I have ordered BUEX 11.d and this will resolve the problem from what the folks at Symantec told me.

Thanks,
