We have Veritas backup exec Version 11d running on a sbs2003 server. I want to be able to backup data onto a tape drive installed on another member server (not sbs2003). Any ideas?

Thanks
Bryan

Unless 11d is dramatically different from every other version ever released, the tape deck must be attached to the Media Server.

I'd move the whole thing over to that member server and get it off SBS.

BE can only use locally-attached devices (unless you use the San Shared Storage Option).
If you've bought the SBS version of BE you can only install it on the SBS server.

I was just looking into this in order to be able to use some older drives for restoring but can't attach them to our current BE server.

I found StarWind iSCSI Target software that can take your tape drive on the remote server and translate it to iSCSI. You then can use MS iSCSI initiator or StarPort as the initiator on your BE server and the remote tape drive now appears locally attached. StarWind / StarPort are found at They do have a PDF on using their software with BE and they do have trial and free versions of the software.

I am still investigating if we really want to do this so I can't offer any testimonial on the software of the company but there is a support forum on their site to see what customers are posting about.

Well technically that solution Starwind would probably not be supported by Symantec. Even though it may work its not a supported solution on Symantec HCL.
