Hi. Anyone knows if ArcServe2000 can do a backup to a local/remote harddisk as the destination, instead of a tape? I know another backup software (Veritas) can do this: backup to a harddisk folder and then to tape. and vice versa.
It can be done with ARCserve as from patch QO11058 ( single install patch ) or with applying Sp4.
Here are the instructions after you installed the patch or Sp4 :
BrightStor ARCserve 2000 Backup Agent for Windows NT/2000: Using File System Devices
The new BrightStor ARCserve Backup update QO11058 now gives users the ability to backup to file system devices. BrightStor ARCserve Backup defines a file system device as any disk-based device BrightStor ARCserve Backup can write to. This includes network-attached storage devices, mapped drives, locally attached SCSI/IDE hard disks, or SAN-attached primary storage devices.
File System devices can be configured by:
- Go into the Device Configuration wizard (accessible through the BrightStor ARCserve program group or the Brightstor ARCserve Manager).
- Select File System Devices.
- Hit the add button to create a new file system device and a new entry will appear in the File System devices table. Two fields of this entry must be modified to work correctly:
- Description - Any description of the file system device can be entered here.
- Location - This is the directory to where BrightStor ARCserve Backup will write. By hitting the right arrow, the path can be found via an explorer window.
- Once all fields/entries are completed, hit the "Finish" button to save the configuration information.
These new file system devices will appear like a normal device/media in the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Device Manager and can be used for backups, restores, merges, and more. While all jobs can be done using these devices, not all Device Manager commands can be used.
Supported Commands in Device Manager:
Quick Erase/Quick Erase Plus - Deletes sessions from that directory and writes a blank header file
Format - Deletes sessions from that directory
Unsupported Commands in Device Manager:
Hardware Compression (Software compression can be set through the Backup Job Options)
Eject
Long Erase
Retention
Please note: Check the free room on the drive BrightStor ARCserve Backup is writing to - there is no limit on how much data BrightStor ARCserve Backup can store in a file system device, so it is possible for BrightStor ARCserve Backup to write to that drive until it is full.
I followed cyclops' instructions and encountered error message "Controller or hardware error" on any of the operations that should be supported (erase, quick erase). Also an attempt to use the file system device as the destination failed. It seems as if there is a bug in the new feature.
My configuration: Arcserve 2000 Advanced Edition, Version 7, Build 1086, SP3 and Patch QO11058 installed.
Please double check the applying of the patch ( all files in the right place, removed or renamed the old ones ?? )
This feature should work like a charm.
The DLL's I am using are those from the patch:
asbackup.dll, 466944, 11.12.2001 17:57:06
aslog.dll, 200704, 11.12.2001 17:57:06
astask.dll, 172032, 11.12.2001 17:57:05
DvConfig.exe,1273856, 11.12.2001 17:57:04
rmsetup.dll, 28672, 11.12.2001 17:57:05
RmSetup6x.dll, 69632, 18.01.2002 20:37:54
tapeeng.dll, 598016, 11.12.2001 17:57:04
But may be there is another problem: My ARCserve is in German, and the patch is only available in English so far.
The whole operation of the device manager looks fine (mixed languages, of course), only the error message when I finally want to erase, format, or write to, is the problem.
I am using a directory on a local disk of the ARCserve Server PC as the destination. Is there anything wrong about that?
The device is shown in the branch "<3> CA FSadapter" like a tape, entitled "FS name", and commented "format unreadable" (because is is not formatted yet). Any ideas?
Thank you, I did check for a German version of the Patch before installing the English version, but it is not yet available. I do, however, not believe that this is the problem. The English DLLs seem to be compatible, because the program runs and is operable. There must be another reason which we have not understood yet.
Sp4 uses different versions of most of the patchfiles, but I'm not familiair with this mixing of language versions so this will be a trial and error for you.
Maybe Jim can ask inside CA whether backup-to-disk should be possible for the German version of ARCserve 2000.
