Hi One of my user just moved her mail from the subfolder to her inbox and the mail didn't get move correctly and it is gone now; what is the best way to restore her mail? does xmerge work? I am running exchange 2003 server.
Unsure if it is the same as 5.5 but do you not have a 'deleted items retention' policy??
If so, you should be able to log into the user's mailbox go to the tools menu (or similar) and see a list of all deleted items within the period of the policy?
I am trying to use the revovery storage group to recover that user's mailbox from the backup, is this very straight forward? I have alreday create the Recovery storeage group and add the mail store to it.
If you have already restored the information store to the recovery storage group then all you need to do is use exmerge to extract the email from the mailbox you wish to restore the files from. I believe the below directions should do it for you...
1.Open exmerge and Click Next at the Welcome screen
2.On the Procedure Selection screen, select Extract or Import and Click Next
3.On the Two Step Procedure screen, select Step 1: Extract data from an Exchange Server Mailbox
4.On the Source Server screen, input the source server information
5.Click Options
5.1.On the Data tab, select User messages and folders
5.2.On the Import Procedure tab, select Archive data to target store
5.3.Click OK
6.Click Next
7.On the Database Selection screen, select the Recovery Storage Group/Mailbox Store box, and click Next
8.On the Mailbox Selection screen, select the mailbox(es) you wish to export (press the control key while selecting multiple mailboxes)
9.Click Next
10.On the Locale Selection screen, click Next
11.On the Target Directory screen, choose where you would like to save the exported file to and click Next
12.On the Save Settings screen, click Next
13.On the Process Status screen, click Finish when the export is complete.
14.Copy the PST to a network location and then add it to the users profile in outlook.
I haven't restore my information store yet, when I try to use the restore on the Exchange server, i get the prompt " Restore to " the server name "", but it doesn't let me choose the directory, I am afraid to restore to my Main Exchange server, Thoghts?
What type of backup software are you using and are you backing up the individual mailboxes or the information store? I am assuming you are backing up the information store, but just want to be sure.
i am using the NTbackup utility, I want to backup one mailbox, but before I do that I need to backup the information store first, am I correct? Also, during the restore, it asks me where do i want to restore to? do I restore to the original exchanger server? if it is, will it over write the current database or just put it to somewhere else?
Do you have a backup prior to her losing her e-mails? If you do not have a backup to restore from, you may be out of luck unfortunately. Could it be possible that she deleted the file from a different folder? If so click on the link below and follow Microsoft's instructions to edit the registry so you can recover files from any folder in your mailbox.
I am not too familiar with backing up exchange with NTbackup, but there are a few articles out there explaining how to do it. It looks like you can not take individual mailbox backups with NTbackup, so you would have to backup and restore the whole information store. I am not sure if you can have NTbackup redirect the files to a recovery storage group, but if you can, make sure you have enough disk space because it creates a parallel copy of your information store. Also, make sure your databases aren't on the same drive as your OS. See below links
