Hello,

On Sun Systems I use ufsdump and ufsrestore. dump/restore seems to be the Redhat LINUX equiv. In testing I found I can easily send dump to a tape device on another host (dump -0u -f myhost:/dev/rmt/0 /). I require this.

I am seeking a simple backup/restore solution for all my RH Linux systems. I may need to restore to different systems or kernal versions.

Is there a better choice?

Thanks,

Michael42

P.S. Sorry for this repost - no reply to 1st.

There are better solutions yes. Depends on wether you want to pay or not also.

The free solution are ( but not limited to )amanda backup, backer upper, tar , dump, rsync etc
Search freshmeat.net for "linux backup"

All the 'real' industrial backup tools support linux like Legato, Arkeia, BRU , lonestar, etc etc
Google for "linux backup" and get out your wallet if you dare.

un1xh3ad, thanks. That is very useful info. :)

Is there any reason dump/restore could not be used? Can I backup say data files on my Redhat 9 system and restore them to my Redhat 8 system?

Thanks for your advice,
