Just curious, does anyone have any experience with companies that do backup and disaster recovery over IP?
I know of a couple, Evault in Canada, BakBones NetVault etc.

Some plusses would be that I don't have to provide the hardware for storage, but I'm curious as to the cost.
and how flexible this would be, especially with a crash and having to restore databases overnight etc.
I also like the idea of off site storage in that regard also?

Thoughts? experiences?

thanks in advance

hi,

there is an new software from powerquest, called
V2I Protector. It works with online images. The backup
and restore works over tcp/ip. an disaster recovery is also possible, and it works great!!!
restore works over an emercency system that comes with an cd. it reconize the installed networkcard and set up an ip connection to your v2i server. so you don't need any tape devices. and it works fine, i use it productive.
further informations see on
i hope that helps you.

Hi D
We use a service from Thinking Safe ( here in the UK and so far it's been pretty reliable. We went for it as they give you a box onsite that is used for local copies of the data and then also have a remote copy for d/r. We worked out that down our 2m line it would take 4 days to restore all the server data so the local box was a good thing.

Depends where you are. I think they're UK only.

Symantec Ghost will create a Network boot disc which you can then use to boot the machine you want to make a backup of onto the network so that you can backup across the network, you just map a drive on your server or whichever computer you want the image stored on.

orry to mention this, Evault, Netvault are in the storage arena. They provide among other service disaster recovery, however, thatis not their premiere service which is off site online data storage.

Since disater recovery is close to data recovery, its not the same topic.

I worked with the EVault service at my last company. If you have multiple locations, the cost of the online service is considerably less than the tape backup process (Veritas, hardware, Iron Mountain for transportation, and buying tapes all the time)

They also license their software so you can bring it in house-- not sure what that is about.
