Hi

I hav a sun server but i do not have Tape Drive but i would like to backup my data which is 5GB in size. I am thinking to use tar the 5GB data into chunks of 600MB so that i can ftp the data to my windows machine and cut the CD . Can any one help how to do it ? Is there a better solution ?

Thanks in advance

I know this sounds a stupid answer but;

Remember, however you backup your data you need to first test (probably with a small subset) that you can restore it back to the (or another) server without error, Otherwise there is no point in backing up.

What type data is this 5Gb, is it from a dB or what, are you sure you need all the data or just a subset of it to be able to recover?

Good Luck,
Laurie.

Oh and another option would be setup samba and share across to your XP, Win2k, NT box.

Why you don't use "ufsdump" and you dump your data to a file on the disk, then you can later ftp the file (but it will be of a larg size) to your machine where you have a tape drive connected to it, and put it on the tape.
use(ufsdump 0uc /Backup_disk/backup_file /ufs_to_be_Backed)
then you can ftp backup_file.
I hope this will help you.

Thanks for the information.

As i do not have another unix box with Tape Drive, I used SAMBA SERVER and copied onto windows box and took the backup.
