Hi there,

We are using a W2003 server with NW 7.2.1 we backup a W2003 Cluster server with a 400GB disk filled with user profiles and files (This server also has 10 other disks with around 1000GB of data). Since a few months the user disk backup keeps on running and running and the backup never finishes. The other backups on this server are fine.

Can you help me? Thnx in advance.

Sorry, but the scenario you describe is not clear (to me). Do you want to tell us that only the backup of the 10 disks is slow or what do you consider when you talk about "the user disk backup"?

What type are these backups?
What does the log say? - Does NW overrule your schedule and tries to run a full each time?

Thank you for your reply. I mean this server has like 10 disk or so and only one disk has backup problems. This disk with problems contains user home and profile folders.
I have problems with full and incremental backups, none seem to finish. I have backupped this disk for years without problems and now it can no longer finish the backup.

In the logs it looks like the saveset is completed but not marked as so and then it is restsrted:

07/02/07 00:03:57 savegrp: s00502.bnl.corp.dhv.com:O:\ failed.
07/02/07 00:03:57 savegrp: s00502.bnl.corp.dhv.com:O:\ will retry 3 more time(s)
07/02/07 00:04:00 nsrd: s00502.bnl.corp.dhv.com:O:\ done saving to pool 'DHVFull' (FU0471L2) 237 GB
07/02/07 00:04:01 nsrd: s00502.bnl.corp.dhv.com:O:\ saving to pool 'DHVFull' (FU0471L2

Thnx.

If there are no errors in the logs except Failed, you can always use verbose logging and see if you can get more info then. You can also try to upgrade to 7.2.2 (if possible) and see if that solves your problem.

It seems that NW can not read the disk completely. Although i expect another error message in this case, i first would start with a thorough file system check.

I know I asked this same question in another thread....

Do you know how many files are on the volume that is failing? I've run into problems backing up volumes that have in excess of 16 million files on them, and at 400G, that's not an unreasonable file count.

It's a limitation in Windows, and another one of the manifesting symptoms is that the server stops responding to all types of requests (connect a drive, termserv, etc), but does still respond to ping.

The Networker symptom that I've seen from this is that the particular saveset runs for hours (and days) at a very low rate of incoming data.
