The small company I work for has put me in charge of figuring out why our backups keep failing and I need help! We are running a Windows NT server and have an OnStream 50GB SCSI DAT Tape Backup and are using Veritas Backup Exec. We haven't gotten a complete backup in months. I do not believe it is problem with the tape hardware because I have been able to back up small files successfully. I have also purchased new tapes to see if that was the problem and apparently it's not as they don't work either. Someone suggested I try downloading Tapeware's 30 day free trial version to see if it is a software problem. I did that, however it is not compatable with our tape drive so I tried reloading Veritas and it is still not working.
The backup appears to hang on different files every time it fails and we have tried shutting down everyone's workstations at night before the backup runs with no success.
I'm trying to avoid having to purchase a new tape drive and starting fresh as I'm not 100% sure that would solve my problem. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great!!

Do you have the latest drivers for both the tape driver and Backup Exec?

We have the latest drivers. A few months ago the backup was working just fine and we haven't changed anything with the system.

We too had similar problems, it did in fact turn out to be that our three tape drives were at fault. Replacing them resolved the problem. Fortunately for us, the drives were under warranty. Perhaps you can get a loaner to test whether you have a bad drive or not.
