Backup issue?

I have an Exchange 2003 server that somehow is not cleaning up the transaction logs and DB even though the maintenance is running. When I check the properties of the priv.edb file, it does not show the last back up dates. It appears to not recognize when a back up has been done. I am assuming this is the problem. Is there something I can do? I'm using a REV Usb Tape drive with Windows Backup.

Did you select the Exchange Information Store in the job defintion of your backup job? Don't select the folders the database is in, select the storage group.
(Expand MS Exchange Server -> <You Server> -> MS Info Store -> Storage Group)
