I was having the problem of the backup hanging up an 99%.

Now- I took it off of Verify and the backup has been running for almost 14 hours. It would normally only take 2 or 3 hours. The backup is still running from 9pm last night. What can I do to stop it from "running" for an eternity? Help?!

After looking at the job log- everything is backed up within 2 hrs... but it still says running HOURS AND HOURS LATER until it says "failed"

It would be helpful to know what ver of Backup Exec is being run as well as what OS it is on. Each component of Backup Exec has its own licensing and OFOs need to be installed on any server that typically has files that are opened during the backup. Are your backup devices installed locally on each machine or are your backups being done across the network to a single tape library? Can't offer much more advice without more details.
Backup Exec has a fairly decent Knowledge Base at Hope it helps. [ponder]

THANK YOU so much for getting back to me.

My backup server is Veritas 8.6- and yes it is the only server backup which is backing up the servers remotely. It has two tape drives on it and I am going to add a third.

Does this help?

Right click on the failed job and look at the job history. It should say in the history what failed. If you post that information, maybe we can help you more.

Thanks! Below I have posted the jobs for both drives!!! Wha can I do to pass these? Maybe it is something to do with the Exchange mailboxes?

I have found that whenever a file is 'skipped', it creates a final FAILURE result. My guess as to why it is taking so long to fail is that it is set to retry the files it skips. I'll take a look at my BE and see if I can find a way to keep it from retrying skipped files.

SQLBill. Thank you soooo much for your help. This is driving me coo coo!

Are you running current agents for Exchange and SQL? One reason it looks like you dont have the correct agents and you are backing up sql in a flat file format which takes forever. If you SQl agent you need to deselct any data in sql files and only select the containers in SQL Server not selecting the file groups.

The remote angents are at 8.5 but it has always worked fine up until now. Do I need to take all of the servers offline to upgrade the remote agents?

So you are saying that I should only focus on the larger containers- C drive D drive... etc?

thanks!!!

I have always found that when using BE (regardless of version), it's best to always use the latest revs of agents and any patches that BE provides. I noticed that you received and error regarding cleaning. Many times, if there is any type of error detected with the tape drive, it will come up as a clean failure (even if you have been cleaning it). A very common mistake is made when the actual tapes become too "old" even if they are being rotated. Sometimes, the tension needs to be "tightened". Looks like your getting a good backup speed, but I would certainly check the drive completely, retension your tapes (or even try new ones) and also apply and install the necessary OFO agents again, but use the latest ones that BE provides. Also, check that tape driver. BE wants to load its own driver and so does NT. The tape drive manufacturer may also have their own tape driver, but usually BEs' drivers work pretty good. Sounds like a lot to do, but believe me, if the backups are taking that long, these items need to be looked at. There have been times where the firmware on the tape drive (if it's SCSI) may not be as compatible with the drivers that are being used, especially if the default NT tape driver is being initialized and used.
Hope some of this helps. Still think its with those OFO agents as well as the drive...

Veritas requires that you keep the correct or matching agents to the Backup exec version as well as the same bulid. I am running 8.6 build 3878 with exhange 2000 agent 8.6 and SQL agent for 2000 8.6. after further review it looks like yor Mailboxes on exchange is where your backup got stuck 5+ hours. Is the mailbox for Jim Gildea still active or is the account disabled? If you disabled this account in active directory this could be a problem.

Imkenny. have not disabled his accout. He happens to be the president of the company (argh!!!) How do I fix that?

Nttechie- thank you as well - I will address those things.

Obviously, you can't disable the presidents email <grin>, but I would certainly take steps to have his mail file "cleaned" so to speak. I only dabbled in the Exchange 5.5 with the Mail Admin where I worked (I was the SysAdmin), but he had some users pst files that were corrupted only within the information store but still functioning for the user. There is a method to create a new mailbox and still retain all the old messages and it will impact the user, but it can be time consuming. I believe that a new mailbox was created for each corrupted mailbox and then their data was merged back into the new mailbox. I did find this link and thought it might help:

I did notice the several errors about standard backup and it sounds like its back to the agents for that one. The backup rate looked very slow compared to the other backup sets. The reference to standard backup sounds like there may be some issue with your remote agents. Let us know how it turns out. [bigsmile]
