Stats,
Archseve 6.1 for Netware, Service SP2
Running Novell Netware 5.2

We are backing up a Novell file server which has a sys volume, Volume 1 and Volume 2. They are all logical drives. They are all part of a raid 5 configuration. This is a local backup, meaning the files are located on the same server as the tape drive(DLT 40) and Archserve. We have never had a problem backing up all three drives(at least 2years). Suddenly two days ago Arcserve was unable to backup Volume 2. It hangs on the first file it encounters on the drive. The other two drives (these are logical not physical) back up fine. We tried a back up of several different directories and files on this drive. They all hang on the estimate stage of the backup. The only difference between this drive and the others is this one contains mac name space to allow mac files to be stored there. Once the backup hangs we usually cannot stop the job. The server has to be taken down. Any Ideas? I will be happy to supply more info if needed. Thanks for any help.

Please can you confirm your version of NetWare as there is no such version as 5.2. -----------------------------------------------------

I work with DeeJay33. The version of Netware is 4.2 Further troubleshooting has determined that it is not hanging on the first file encountered but repeatedly hangs in one specific directory. This directory contains 672 files. These files are mostly Word documents and Excel spreadsheet files. It seems to hang on the first file it encounters in this directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Please make sure the volume 2 doesn't have any errors by doing a vrepair.
If the other 2 volumes are doing fine, you can logically suspect there is some issue with vol2.

Hope this helps!

We did run vrepair on all three volumes but found no problems. We were however able to figure out the problem. Inoculan was causing the system to hang during backup. Nothing really pointed to it but we decided to unload Inoculan and then try the backup again and then it worked. We tested it by loading Inoculan again and it again hung. Once unloaded again it backed up again. We took Inoculan out of the startup routine and have been fine since. It has been two weeks now. Thanks for all the help. Hopefull this will help someone in the future.
