i know that I can program a backup route for outgoing calls in the event my T1 goes down but what about for INCOMING calls? they all come in over our three T1s and I wanted to know if I could program another route for incoming calls. Is this possible? and also, is a COT route ALWAYS outgoing only? or can it be incoming AND outgoing? if so, can I just take on of my COT lines from my backup outgoing route and put it in a backup incoming route? thank you.

Hi TC,

How calls arrive on your incoming lines is determined by Telco. They have to know where to point the calls. If they are coming in over a T1 span, then most likely they are pointing it to a switch and trunk that is assigned to your company. You would have to explore with them if they have special arrangements for failover for disaster recovery.

i have always been confused by the term "telco". Does this mean Verizon? Verizon used to handle our traffic but when we installed our 3 T1s AT&T "ported" our main number (which from what I understand means the main # is no longer in Verizon's switch but in AT&T's switch). So I need to talk to AT&T, right? we already have a meeting scheduled but I was just wondering if I could set up a COT for backup for incoming like I do for outgoing. I guess not, but thanks anyway for your help!

Hi Tcom,

Yes, it sounds like you need to talk with ATT. You can make COTs in and out. Do they have phone numbers associated with them? Could you set up a contingency plan with ATT that when (err I mean if of course) the T1s go down, that they can point your main number to your COTs. Are your COTs arranged in a hunting pattern? Meaning if ATT points it the main number to the copper for the backup, then they will hunt if that first line is busy. Do you just have verizon copper in your PBX or do you have any Verizon T1s in there as well?

yes, the COTs have phone numbers. So maybe I can take four of them out of my backup outgoing route (I really have more than I need anyway) and ask ATT to point our main # to the first COT (by the way, who is responsible for how they hunt? Verizon?)and then, if they are in a hunt group, at least four people can call in, right? And is this something that can be put in effect NOW or do I have to wait for T1s to go down then call them and wait for them to do it?

Tcom,

Verizon would be responsible for the hunt pattern of the lines. Then 4 people could call in.

I would address the question with ATT about if you can put this into effect now...I don't have this set up for my current location for my local calls. I would think they would have an automated system and would be able to offer an opportunity to test.
