Hi again, onwards and upwards in our quest for knowledge! I just started a job with the option 11 with two cabinets attached and an expansion cabinet. I was told that option 11 only has one core so there is no standby and that if the power fails for whatever reason there is no redundancy. I was told that the expansion cabinet kicks in within 15 minutes (off of a UPS). This does not sound like Nortel, making a switch with no redundancy. My primary concern is backup and I dont see what I like. I would also like to back up the symposium and web client with hot standby servers attached to the UPS and the servers. Is it true that opt 11 cannot be redundant? Is there no way at all?? Thank you for the help. Alana

option 11 cannot redundancy.

if your system is 11c you can backup system by flash card.

if your system is 11e you can backup system by xmodem using LD43. (more detail you can find in book of backup and restore guide p0800413)

thank you. even though its possible to back up system by flash card, there is no redundancy. why cant a script be written to direct traffic to ip expansion in the event of cpu failure? thanks for you help wilsontec

The closest thing to redundancy is survivability. If you have two cabinets connected via Ethernet (NTDK20 in each cabinet) then you can set up survivability so that if the link between the two cabinets goes down then each cabinet will act like its own PBX. You have to make sure that you have trunks assigned in each cabinet so that calls can still go out and in. It works rather well if set up correctly.

Hi Arch, is it true that the survivability (switchover to ip expansion)takes 10-15 minutes? Currently there are 3 pris on the expansion and 3 on the meridian (along with t3). I am concerned as to how to direct the three on the meridian to the expansion cabinet in the event of a corrupt core card. Are you saying to put the same trunks on "two" pbx's; how? We have 1 meridian,1mail,2 expansion cabinets and 1 ip expansion (for purpose of "redundancy"). Thank you

redundancy on a ip remote is very unsatisfactory, 10 min is quick for that switchover and if you have a 10 sec outage, the ip remote will switchover, come up with ext numbers changed and then take another 10 minutes to switch back. (ouch) a better way to eng that is to have a complete opt 11 at the remote site with pri's between them. if you have pri's for your two way did's and both have a dch, if one goes down then the other will stay alive, you'll need dsc's in each switch, so if the co sends a number to either pri, the dsc will send it across the link, so if switch a goes down, all did's will go to switch b...with pri's one voice mail and confort features will work.. the co will just have all your trunks in the same group..

nice to hear from you again johnpoole!the company is a call center that grew from 40-400. there will be 4 other counties involved (small offices(30 people)).I was thinking this switch is not worth enhancing for 400 people rather it could be sent to a smaller office. We ultimately want vpns and sip phones.Without utilizing the pp8600 for the vpns is there a solution pbx-wise;any suggestions;what would you recommend? if we need to buy another meridian1 opt 11, to enable redundancy, we might as well spend the $ on a futuristic platform with redundancy. Alana

400 station is a little small for a 61 but i like dual cpu's, for a call center down time is never an option, a second 11 would be a much more reduntant option then a remote, i've seen apps where a few hours down time cost almost the price of a switch... proactive is worth it's weight in gold, most upper management only thinks of voice service if it doesn't work.. Strange but the servers down or the networks down is a common complaint, the switch is down and you spend 10 minutes bring it back up and a week writing emails

Yes you are right about that! I met with Bell today and sort of hashed out a plan. Use the cards in a 61 and later(June) ship out the opt 11 to Dallas with a t3 between them. We then utilize what we have, provide redundancy and have voip. Perhaps I should look again at your suggestion though and do a cost analysis. as always thank you John. Alana
