Newbie here,
I have AIX 5 pseries
the tape is in, but the server keeps giving me this error:
"File Permissions or Device not ready"

Where do I look to see where the permissions changed?

Thanks for any advice!

What command are you trying to run and as who (root or another user)? Is the tape /dev/rmt0 (or /dev/rmt0.1 etc)? Does mt -f /dev/rmt0 status tell you anything? Sorry for all the questions, but it would be useful to have this info. as an aid to diagnostics. Regards.

Hi KenCunningham,
Was trying to fix why not backing up overnight as usual, and why the error message from backup.
as root, I ran the command you suggested:
# mt -f /dev/rmt0

and got this:

status
rmt0 Available 11-08-00-0,0 LVD SCSI 8mm Tape Drive
attribute value description user_settable

mode yes Use DEVICE BUFFERS during writes True
block_size 1024 BLOCK size (0=variable length) True
extfm yes Use EXTENDED file marks True

density_set_2 40 DENSITY setting #2 True
compress yes Use data COMPRESSION True
size_in_mb 60000 Size in Megabytes False

is the tape bad?

It looks that way. Can you try another tape and run some test data to it? Cheers.

**wonderf..*** these tapes are soo expensive! ok

Thanks KenCunningham! I'll put in another Mammothtape 225 AME in and see if the backup works tonight. Looks like I'm on the right track to learn UNIX huh?
