My backup runs every night...it writes 16 gigs of data to the tape with no errors and then the job log says backup completed failed, any ideas...I've had problems before but there was always an error message...

What if you expand the log and review, there should be an error somewhere in the log, indicating the problem?

Also, since we'll likely need to know, what is the capacity of the drive and tapes? (both compressed and uncompressed please)

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

tape capacity is 12.5 gig native 25 gig compressed
here is the job log of a failed job

Okay, so your backup, does 3 things, backs up something on c, exchange state, data (h drive?)...

First thing I see, is that it happens in the morning, when users are working, can you change this to say, 1 in the morning?

Next, I would break this down to 3 jobs, not one. Will also make troubleshooting easier.

1. Backup data first, overwrite tape.

2. Backup exchange, append to tape, schedule 3 hours after the first job, and terminate if it can't append.

3. Backup whatever files on c you want, schedule 3.5 hours after the first job, and terminate if it can't append. Also, do you really need anything off the c drive? Typically if a server or backup pc fails, I reload the os from scratch, create users/domain, then restore the data.

Do that, and then see which job fails.

Also, I don't know if this is the cause, but it doesn't like the following paths...

\NET_DATA\SHARE\David
\NET_DATA\SHARE\Ron Webster

Your backup fails because of this..

Directory not found. Can not backup directory \NET_DATA\SHARE\David and its subdirectories.
Directory not found. Can not backup directory \NET_DATA\SHARE\Ron Webster and its subdirectories.

go into the job, change the view to text and delete this lines from the selection list.

or just create a new job.
If you want to choose which directories to backup, always select the drive first, then unselect what you don't want. That way this shouldn't happen again.

Or if Justin's suggestion doesn't fix it. Just create a seperate appendable job that backs up half of Drive H:. Leave the other half of H: on the original job. This error is misreported by BE, your cache file is running out of drive space "MAYBE".
