I'm having a strange problem. I'm using backup exec 7.2 with NT 4.0 and my DDS 3 backup fails even though the data is backed up and the verify completes with 0 files different. The only thing I could see is that I'm getting 4 "error: Can not backup directory..name of directory" errors. I checked (searched) for these directories and cannot find them. Could this be it? how could the backup pick up these directories if they are not present. Even if they were deleted they should not show up in the backup. Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Yes, the absence of a directory that is selected for backup will produce that error. Go into your backup job and de-select the missing directories.

What I've seen 7.5 do... Let's say I want to backup all of drive D: so in the job I simply select the D: drive (meaning "all of this disk"). Job runs, no prob. Years later, some user creates a new directory on D:. Since I asked for all of D: for backup, the new directory is automatically selected for backup. Job runs, no prob. Decades later, the user deletes the directory he created. Job runs, errors with "directory not found". BE will add a new dir to the job list, but doesn't know what to do when a dir is no longer there.

I think the directories may have been deleted because I can't find the directories in the selection.....would creating "dummy" empty directories with the same name do the trick you think?

it's strange that the backup is picking up these directories and I can't find them in the backup selection. I searched the drive for the directories and nothing. Where else could the backup be getting these directories? weird!!!

You could create dummy directories and this would stop the errors, but it's poor management. Personally, i'd just let the job error rather than create dummies (are you going to remember why they're there 3 years from now?)

The way I would try to fix it is to delete the job and re-create it.

The problem is in your selections...manually recreate the backup job or just the file/folder selections. I'd recommend the text mode view rather than the GUI to double-check the listing.

FYI-This is a historic BE problem but it's been fixed in 8.x and I've never seen this crop up in 2.5+ years of running 8.x since upgrading.
