Backup Exec Version 8 - backups hang after scan

I have Backup Exec loaded on an Compaq Server with attached DLT Tape Library. The backups on 4 of the servers would "hang" after going through the scan. Some of the jobs would actually start the backup, but the job would then stop and "hang" until the system was rebooted. A reboot was the only way to abort the job.

I disabled the Backup Agent Accelerator service on the affected servers. This now allows the backups to complete successfully. I am unsure why this is an issue on these 4 servers, and not an issue on the other 10 where Agent Accelerator is also loaded. I have sent an email to Veritas posing the question. I would welcome any input as to why I am having this issue.

I'm not sure which scan you refer to, but there was recently a patch to the virus scanner in all the NT/2000 BE's. Make sure that's in place.

Or are you talking about the pre-backup scan that figures the backup size and estimates the time needed? What happens if you turn the pre-scan off?

Since your backup server is not allowing you to abort the job without a reboot I do not think it's something like a network firewall problem. Since all the agents broke at the same time it is most likely some software conflict on the backup server. You didn't mention your OS, but I know that keeping NT patched and stable is a fairly important and difficult task. Is the server dedicated to backups or is there other stuff running that might be conflicting?

Thank you for responding. I updated the virus scanner for BE. The scan I am talking about is the pre-backup scan. I have not disabled the pre-scan, althought that was the next step. I am running Windows NT 4 Server, Enterprise Edition. The Server running BE is also running Compaq Insight Manager, APC UPS Powerchute, and Linksys Printer Server. The backups are working fine on the other 10 servers on the network, just the 4 servers referenced above that the backups were hanging.
