Hi everyone. Does anyone know if you can take an old tape that was written to by backup exec and extract the data back onto hard disk using Netbackup 5.0?

There is a section of the Veritas Netbackup 5.0 Admin guide on Page 250 that speaks to this. I will sum it up for you but I recommend you read it carefully yourself before attempting!
Importing and Restoring QIC Media
To import and restore Backup Exec. (QIC) media written with tape block sizes more than 512 bytes, you must use a Netbackup Windows media server. A NB Unix Media server will NOT work to import and restore the media in this case.

Spanned Media Importing Differences:

When importing an image that spans multiple media make sure the import phase one the first volume in order then run a phase 1 import on the rest of the media. NB does not care about order when importing it's own media as long as they are all of the media have been phase 1 imported before attempting to finish.

Browsing and Restoring Differences:

When browsing for a file to restore on an imported backup exec image and you select one file to restore (the entire directory that the files resides in will also be restore)

Please note there are also special instructions for SQL and Netware backups that should be read before restoring any data. Hope this helps!
