Backup Exec SQL plugin VS not

Good morning,

I am probably going to be upgrading from Backup Exec 8.6 to 10d. The previous admin had our SQL DB back itself up to a file daily and then Backup Exec would grab that file and back it up.

What I am wondering is what is the benefit of paying the extra $600 or so for the SQL plugin VS backing my DB up this way?

The way you describe is how I do my SQL backups. If you will peruse this forum (and others) you will see a lot of posts regarding problems with the SQL Agent. Letting SQL back itself up practically guarantees a valid archive.

A note: I'm not dissing BE's SQL Agent, it's probably as good as anybody's. I'm dissing all SQL Agents regardless of the manufacturer. I've seen (and experienced) too many horror stories to make that slight bit of convenience worth risking loss of data.

I will now be flamed by the Backup Exec purists...

I won't flame you.

However I will state that as long as the SQL backup backsup the transaction log, then that is okay. I've only had experience with the Galaxy Commvault backup of database information. Although I am backing up my databases at home with BE 10 and have had no problems yet.
