Basically the problem that I'm experiencing is getting the damm tape DLT drive to load a tape. The tape drive is a Dell PowerVault 120T DLT 7000 Tape Loader.

For that last few days nothing has been getting backed up. I've come in and checked the job in the mornings and the job status says 'pending' and has been for about 14 hours. I've watched it for a little while and the status changes to loading media and then pending again.

I've manuelly run a job to start now and that does the same thing, Have you come across this before???

Thankyou in advance

I had this *exact* same problem. Given that I don't know your server type or backupexec version, I'll assume you have the same as mine (Win2000 Server SP2, BE8.6).

First check your 'Removable Storage' Service. Kill it if you can. Set it to manual. Then retry your backups. If *that* doesn't work, do the following:

The Removable Storage Service Hangs on Startup (Q316500)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
The information in this article applies to:

a.. Microsoft Windows 2000 , Server

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

SYMPTOMS
After you install Windows 2000, the following error message may be displayed
in the System Event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Description: The Removable Storage service hung on starting.
The %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData folder that is created by Removable
Storage Manager (RSM) may not present on your computer. Additionally, one of
the following registry keys (or one of its entries) may be missing or
damaged:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc
Enum , Config , Parameters and Security keys.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CCS\Control
Initialized key.

If you attempted to start the Removable Storage service manually, you may
receive an error with code 1053.

CAUSE
The Removable Storage service may not have been completely installed during
Windows 2000 Setup, or registry damage occurred since the last reboot.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:

1.. Locate the %Systemroot%\INF\Rsm.inf file.

2.. Right-click the Rsm.inf file, and then click Install .

3.. Create an new, empty folder (named Ntmsdata) in the
%Systemroot%\System32 folder, and then restart your computer.

If a system state backup is available, you can restore the system hive from
backup, and not use the preceding manual steps:
Q235032 Problems with a Damaged Removable Storage Manager Database

MORE INFORMATION
After installing Removable Storage Manager by using the Rsm.inf file, the
following registry keys are recreated:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc\Parameters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc\Config
This installation process for RSM also registers the Ntmssvc.dll,
Ntmsmgr.dll, and Ntmsevt.dll file on the next reboot when the RunOnce
registry key is parsed.

Hello Jonathan

I'm running version 8.5 on a Windows NT 4 Server.

I tried disabling the device for backup exec, deleted the drive. Restarting all the services and then tried backing up again without success.

Any other ideas ?

Is the service 'Removable Storage' running? If so, stop it, and ideally set it to manual so it doesn't restart on reboot, because it and the Backup Exec program compete for the tape drive and get locked up over it. Then try running backups again.

Cheers.

I don't seem to have a service called 'Removable Storage' I have 'Protected Storage'. I checked the job this morning and the job status said 'Deviced Paused' for some strange reason. I'm tempted to re-install the whole software but I can't find 8.5.

Would you believe that this could be down to a driver error? The last backup that run successfully was last friday and before that nothing has changed.

Any other ideas?

Regards
Richard

Could it be hardware issue? Contact Dell and see if you can troubleshoot a possible hardware issue. Seems like you have tried everything on the software side that would rule out software. Sorry for not being of much help. Do you see anything in the event logs that can help you?

I think I've solved it, someone mentioned to me that it could be that the tapes are out of date and as they were all purchased at the same time, they are all having the same problems. I formated a tape rather that letting the job over write the files and it seems to be working.
Thanks for the help. I hope this solves the problem long term.
Regards
Richard
