Backup Exec cannot backup exchange mailboxes.
We are running Backup Exec ver 8.60 Rev. 3878 on Windows 2000 SP3/Exchange 2000SP3.

When I open up backup exec to check/set the objects to be backed up and select Microsoft Exchange mailboxes, it asks/tells me the following:
'Backup Exec could not attach to this Exchange Server. Please enter the unique Exchange mailbox name that belongs to the Backup Exec Services Account'.

I think I may have deleted the backup exec account that was created on this server when backup exec was installed.

I tried the Administrator account, but to no avail....

Any ideas?

You need to set up an account on the domain and put a mailbox with it. In Exchange, make sure the account is an exchange admin. Then log into your backup server with the credentials. Make sure all Backup Exec services are running with these credentials (give the account domain admin rights). Configure the job (and my personal opinion, all jobs) whjile logged in with the credentials. Configure Outlook to connect to the account's mailbox (for Mapi config). Then try selecting the mailboxes.

On another note. You may want to re-think backing individual mailboxes. There's some debate about doing brick-level backups. Personally, I only back up the IS (and in a 5.5 environment, the DS also). Should I need to recover an individual's mailbox items, I restore to a recovery server (which I've made out of a spare desktop once). This way the back up runs faster, I don't get failed jobs from OLE objects reporting as corrupt, etc....

Hmm. already there..

Have Administrator account.... logging in as Administrator

If I try to connect to the mailboxes, BackupExec says
"Backup Exec could not attch to this Exchange Server
Please enter the unique Exchange mailbox name that belongs to the Backup Exec Services Account"

The BackupExec services ALL logon with the Administrator account.

Any further ideas on this one?

to resolve your issue:

Sounds like you have the exchange agent installed and are having issues being able to BU (backup) indiv. mailboxes:

Follow these steps:

A- install a mapi client on the media server (if exchange is local to BE and its exchange 2000, I would recommend you stop the exchange services first)
b) log on with the BE service account (check to see what account is being used to start the BE services)on to the media server.
c) create a mailbox for the BE service account making sure the 1st 5 letters are unique
d)If you are using Outlook 2000 as the mapi client : stop all BE services on the media server > copy the mapi32.dll from the 103*\nt directory to the veritas\backup exec\nt directory > start all be services (dont use Outlook 2002 or outlook express)
e) you should still be logged on with the BE service account at this stage > create the profile for the service account and send "yourself" a testmail. If the email is not received you have some sort of connectivity issues going on there and as BE uses mapi as the connection to the mailboxes, you going to have difficulties. Check the mailbox is present in the global address list and make sure its not hidden.
f) try to attach (you will be prompted the first time)...still an issue?....
g) in System amanger > delegate control and give the BE service account Full excahange admin rights, if 5.5 verify that the BE service account has the exchange service account admin role and site, configuration and server levels incl. send as and mailbox owner rights.....

- hope this helps

Hi.
Yes, using BE Exchange Agent
All BE services logon as Administrator
The backup exec service account is missing (the one created by Veritas).
I removed and readded BE and the same problem occurs.
You stated in your reply, 'create a mailbox for the BE service account making sure the 1st 5 letters are unique'
I have the administrator account. Or are you refering to something else?
I'm logged in as Administrator
All Services are logged in as Administrator
I have Outlook 2k already on the server (MAPI client) which works fine.
But Backup Exec wants to attach to a unique Exchange mailbox name that belongs to the Backup Exec Services Account'.
But I don't have a Backup Exec group or account present - this is the problem... and a reinstall of BE didn't recreate the account.....

The BE service account is the log on account used for the 6/7 BE services you have running on the media server.
When you installed BE you would of been asked if you want to create an account or use an exisiting account. Sounds like you entered the administrator account rather than let BE create one for you

You need to be logged on with this account (the admin ac in your case) and create the profile while logged on with this on the media server. The profile and mapi is the connection to the mailboxes

- sounds like you are using the admin account as the BE service account. Log on withthis account onto the media server. From there create the profile pointing towards the unique mailbox

- also did you check the mapi32.dll (this step is only to be performed on the media server)as advised above? This is more often the reason if all the exchange agent has been set up correctly .

Hope this helps but drop a past if you still are having probs.

F1lby,

the administrator account by default does not have sufficient permissions to view user mailboxes. it will not work.
you need to create a new account (i call mine databot) and give that account FULL Exchange permissions.
log into your exchange server as that account. make sure you can send / receive (outlook 2000) email while logged into Exchange server with that account.
on the Exchange server have the Backup Exec services run under that account name (i.e. databot).
you must be logged in as this account in order to select mailboxes in Backup Exec.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND FIXED IT... HERE's what I did...

I followed these instructions:

AND I ALSO DID:

Copy \Program Files\Common Files\System\MAPI\1033\NT\MAPI32.DLL to \Program Files\Veritas\BackupExec\NT and RECYCLE SERVICES (Backup Exec 8.x Server)

THAT DID IT! IT WAS DEFINATELY THE MAPI32.DLL THAT WAS NOT IN THE \Program Files\Veritas\BackupExec\NT folder. I've been trying to get mine to work for about 2 days. I lost an exchange server with 800 Users!!!! My Veritas was skipping the private & public information store files! OOPS! hehe.

I hope you didn't install Outlook on the Exchange server. MS strongly advises against putting Outlook on the same server as Exchange!!! You can break one or the other's mapi subsystem.

That said, do this:
1. Create a new account for the Backup Exec (BE) services. This account must have a mailbox where the first 5 letters are unique meaning there is no other mailbox in your organization that has the same first 5 letters. This mailbox CANNOT be hidden.
2. Make new account member of Administrators and Domain Admins group. Pull Domain Users membership out.
3. In Exchange System Manager, Delegate Control to this new account at Org level as Exchange Full Administrator.
4. In Exchange System Manager, expand your server, then the storage group, then right-click your mailbox store and choose Properties, then Security. Make sure the new BE account has 'Allow' for Receive As and Send As permissions.
5. Close Backup Exec and close Outlook. Stop your Backup Exec services and if possible, your Exchange services.
6. Uninstall Outlook and reboot.
7. Go to Start|Run and type: regsrv32 "c:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin\cdo.dll" (type everything including quotes and spaces and you should get a pop up stating the registration of the cdo.dll was successful)
8. Start BE services, open BE and try attaching to mailboxes. When it prompts you for the unique mailbox name you have to enter the DISPLAY name of the mailbox exactly as it appears in the Global Address List in Outlook. (Check Outlook on another computer for this.)

Good luck.
