I am running LAN with WIN 2000 advanced server. I have Backup Exec 8.6 and am trying to back up the workstations to the tape drive connected to the server. It keeps asking for a valid username "(eg. Domain\Username)"and password but refuses to accept anything I enter. This is the most obtuse software I have ever encountered.

Are all the workstations on the same domain as the server?

Have you managed to connect to and backup any of the workstations?

Have you tried connecting to the workstation using a local admin account instead of domain admin?

Are the BackupExec services set to start as a Domain Admin user level account?

What OS' are the workstations running?

Sorry to hear you're having problems with 8.6. We used it for over three years with no problems; we 'upgraded' to 9.x 6 months ago and I sometimes wish we hadn't...

not sure

xp pro; xp home; 98

2000 advanced on the server; I wish I still had Netware 3.12.

On the W2K server, open Control Panel\ Admin Tools\ Services and look at the Backup Exec services. Are they all running as a Domain Admin level account (ie, not a local account)?

Also, have you tried pinging the workstations from the server, or connecting to any UNC shares on them?
