Hello,

I have AD Windows 2000 server and Backup Exec 9.1 with Service Pack installed. My backup job runs very very slow it only gives me 40MB/M. Another big problem I have is during Backup File Selection, when I select folders or drives to backup it will take a long time to display or select the folders.

It seems my SCSCI device and backup Tape drive seems to be working fine..

Do you have any idea ?

Sound like these problems are both caused by the one source
Few things to check
Fully scan the machine for viruses and make sure its clean
Try disabling any virus checking software as this can seriously affect throughput.
Have you checked the Veritas site for updated patches relevant to your product - I use 9.1 also and they are constantly bringing out new patches.
Do any of the folders you backup have an extraordinary amount of files in them (filesize unimportant - amount of files ...lots of small database files etc)

Steve

Hi Steve,

I fix the problem regarding the rate, but this time I have another problem is that whenever I try to to create a backup job or select files to restore it takes a while to display or select the file list. The response time is quite very slow.

For example I want to restore a directory and then I click the destination and it will take a while to display the list. I have to wait for 5 minutes to display the next directory.

Any idea?

What did you do to fix the problem with the rate?

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

I Have the same problem after a power outage.
What did you do to fix the problem with the rate?
Thanks

Do you have the agent installed on the servers you are backing up?

Have you investigated for any possible network issues such as dns & wins or possible router/firewall conflicts?

If you had a power outtage - the problem could be to do with your network hardware. Try using a different switch and set the NICs on both servers (backup server and client agent server) to 100MB half duplex and see if this makes a difference. Auto sensing isn't always the best option

I don't know if it'll help anyone, but I recently resolved an issue I was having on 5 Windows 2000 SP4 Servers that had just been upgraded from BE8.6 to BE9.1 SP1. I went from seeing job rates that ranged from 600MB/min to 1100MB/min down to seeing job rates around the 120-150MB/min mark.

I'm using Adaptec 29160 SCSI adapters in all 5 servers and have always used Adaptec drivers. 4 of the servers have internal Quantum SDLT220 tape drives and 1 has an external Quantum SDLT320 tape drive.

It turned out to be simply a matter of upgrading to the most recent version of the Adaptec driver for the 29160 card. (version 6.1.6300.100). I have seen a few posts indicating improvements by moving to an older Adaptec driver (ie. Microsoft driver) but that didn't change anything in my case. In summary here's is what is now working for me and allowing the old job rates again:

Windows 2000 SP4 (all hotfixes/patches applied)
Veritas BE 9.1.4691 SP1
Veritas Device Drivers - PNP Version 5.1.1.1
Adaptec 29160 SCSI Driver - 6.1.6300.100
Quantum Tape Drive Firmware - Version 82
