I have a win 2000 server with a dlt1 backup device in and need to backup files across the network from a windows nt4 server using backup exec 8.6. When trying to connect to the nt4 i get the following error "failed connecting to service". I can however connect to my windows 2000 server from windows nt 4 server with no problems but not vice versa. Anybody help me?

Do you have the Remote Agent? If not, then you can't backup remote servers.

Does the Backup Exec service account have permissions to access the remote server?

Yes remote agent is installed on both machines.
Using remote agent I can connect to the Windows 2000 server no problems from my NT4 server but unfortunately the backup device is in my w2k server and all the data files on my nt4 server so I need to connect the other way round if that makes sense.

So what you are saying is that you have the full Backup exec 8.6 loaded on both the servers and also the remote agent on both the servers?

If this is the case - remove the remote agent on the W2K server, so it just has the full backup exec on it.
On the NT4 server, remove the full version of backup exec, so it only has the remote agent on it.

Justin,
Tried what you suggested but still the same result "failed connecting to service". Not sure what to try next...any other suggestions?

First, as Justin asked, do you have BE installed on both servers? If so, WHY?

Second, do you have Remote Agent on both machines? Again, WHY?

You only need the Full Backup Exec on the Backup Server. You only need the Remote Agent on the remote server that you need to backup.

Do you have two licenses for each? If not, that could be your problem. You not only need a license for each Backup Exec install, you need a license for EACH Remote Agent install.

If that's not the issue, I suggest checking permissions. This is usually caused by the Backup Exec service not having the proper permissions on the remote server.
