I'm new to Networker and ran into a snag trying to backup data from my EMC Celerra.
I have a new HPDL380, installed Networker 7.3.2, have Scalar24 direct attached to server.
Mapped a drive using Windows to a share on the Celerra and tried to back it up by adding the drive letter to the saveset in Networker = No Go.
Read Admin Guide, says to use UNC path so I added \\NAS1\DataFolder to saveset, tried to backup again = No Go.

Am I missing something here?
I just want to do simple backups of data living on the Celerra, don't want NDMP or snapshotting involved unless that is necessary.

thanks all.

from windows share you cannot take the backup of celera directly

first you have to create a client (NDMP client) from configuration tab-->create new client-->give the IP Address of the celera-->dont forget to give NDMP User name & Password.

It looks that you are a novice to this subject. Unfortunately, your information is simply incomplete. So i can give you only general guidelines.

If you want to back up a Celerra, there is simply no software on the filer to support that operation. The Celerra is an NDMP device. Consequently you can only use
NDMP. Please read the Admin Guide for more details.

If you want to backup a Celerra to your NW server, you must
not forget to activate the DSA agent (since NW 7.2) by using the "-M" option for the nsrndmp_save command.

sandeep20 thanks for the reply.
I'll give this a try. Basically I should go to Configuration, into the group, add a new client but put in the IP of the NAS, then check off NDMP box and supply username+password with permissions?

605,
Thank you for your reply. Sorry about the lack of info, yes I'm very new to the product.
You mention "activate DSA agent using -M option for nsrndmp_save command"
Do I do that on the "Apps & Modules" tab of the client, under "Backup Command"?
Like this:
C:\Program Files\Legato\nsr\bin\nsrndmp_save -M

'-M' is actually an option to the backup command.

Depending yon your configuration and what you want to do, you must set the options appropriately. Please have a look at the Admin Manual and the manpages.

Also be aware that you can not run manual mackups on NDMP filers.

Hey - Using NDMP is definitely the best way to go. It'll generally be faster, most likely be less complex and you'll see better results than the method below.

Recongizing that some folks don't have the option for one reason or another, here's something else you can try...

I did this a couple of years ago, and it worked, though beware, if you backup this way, you may lose file permission when you restore. Also understand that EMC may or may not (?) support you using this method. If you decide to try this, test both backups and restores thouroughly. (I can't stress this enough!)

1) Create a backup script on the client called something like "save_CIFS.cmd". Save it to ...\nsr\bin.

2) Edit the script. Add commands to map the drives (if they're not already mapped) then add save commands similar to:

save -s <backup_server> -L -b <pool_name> <Drive Letter>

Repeat as necessary.

3) Then, create a new client profile for the Windows host. In the new profile, change the save set to something like "C:\TEMP" (to avoid backing up the entire Windows host) and add the save_CIFS.cmd (or whatever you called it) to the backup command field.

4) Start the backup group with the new client profile.

Again, if you have the option, use NDMP. If you absolutely positively can't, something like this should do the trick.
