Backup crashes during File compare

Hello,

since 2 weeks every backup crashes.
All the data is backed up (I can see it in Restore too),
but when it comes to the end and want to compare the CRC-values (like I set in the backup-options) the backup crashes
nearly at the end of the compare.
The job status is crashed but the job-log doesn't show any errors!!!
Does anybody see something like this before?
I work with ARCSERve 2000 Advanced Ed. withthe latest SP installed (and everything works fine befor)

1-make sure arcserve sp5 is applied.
2-put the job engine in debug mode to get detailed info.
3-check DR watson log to see if there is any errors
4-Is there any errors appearing in event viewer application log.

It is tough to get a lot out of Dr Watson but here is the most important part.
Anwendung: (pid=2548) pid = process ID

The usual reasons for a crash is a mix match of files, in other words an older version of one or more of the files. This can happen my mistake or if an update is incomplet.

Another common cause is corruption. Could be a corrupt job, the queue, or even the database.

First step is to see what happens after SP5 is installed.

We began experiencing this problem *after* installing SP5. Our backup jobs would crash because of a Dr Watson error (exception c0000005) in asrunjob.exe whenever the scan operation got to the session that contained the System State information for the server that was being backed up. Until a permanent fix can be found we have removed the verification step from our backups. Has anyone else encountered/resolved this problem?

General rule any time a problem starts right after installing a service pack reinstall the service pack.

Set all the services to manual.
Restart the system.
Install the service pack.

I have the same problem right after applying service pack 5. It only seems to be apparent on the Advanced Edition Also since applying SP5, my tapes are no longer moving to Scratch Set after the time limit. I have to move them manually. Anybody?

the problem still exists. I run the backups now without
checking the CRC-value at the end of backup-process.
If I set this option the backup still crashes.
I wait (hope) for a fix from CA.

What I would like to know:
is it possible to go back to SP3 level and how can I do this?
I don't find an option for uninstall SP5.

Thanks for the reply. The only way I know to go back is to reinstall Arcserve. Maybe someone here knows the procedure for reinstallation and preserving the database. In the past I believe what I did was copy the database to another directory, uninstalled, reinstalled, and then (All engines stopped)copy the old database into the new installation and restart the enginges. It's been a while though and I forget if this is the exact procedure.

You got it.
Just copy the database directory to a different location and then copy it back. I add only one thing and that is to take something away. Do not copy back the r*.* files into the new installation.

BTW you can do the same thing with the queue. Just copy the whole queue directory to a different location and then copy it back after the reinstall.

As you point out, it is very important that &quot;all&quot; the services are stopped and the Manager closed.

My reply is if doing a compare on the System State can corrupt the System State, shouldn't the Arcserve Software be intuitive enough not to attempt this? It has been my experience that when this worked correctly the compare only occurred on the data drives and not on the System State, however since SP5 it is trying to compare the System State and now it is &quot;corrupt&quot;.
I have tried setting the Verification by right clicking on the individual drive and selecting options, and then checking the Scan Backup Media Contents, but the activity log shows no evidence that any verification occurs when I do this.
Anybody know how to get the verify to work using the options tab on the individual drives? Maybe I'm missing something?

But this cannot be meant serious, that we cannot make the CRC-checking after Backup when backing up the SystemState (what I think everybody have to do in every backup!!).

As you I would be glad to have a bugfix of CA or at least a workaround like setting the checking manually only on the drives.

I am having the same problem with Arcserve2000 SP5 Jobs being reported as crashed. Additionally, SP5 updated the client on an XP machine and made it unreliable in the compress files backing up to disk mode. (I ran a test backup/restore after installing SP5). I had to copy the NTAgent file from QO19353 back onto the XP machine to start getting reliable backups.

It appears that even though the job is usually reported as crashed (sometimes it finishes cleanly), it has acutally been successful. Database mangement with ArcServe shows the job as Finished and the contents of the job are shown when I look at it from the Restore by session menu.

This is on a Windows 2000 server and nothing is shown in the event log when a job crashes.

Unfortunately the crashed job is placed in a hold status and the date for next execution is not advanced.

WRT database preservation, I always backup my database with each job so I can recover if necessary. I've had to blow away arcserve and reinstall more than once. I updated to SP5 only because it was there. That'll teach me to leave well enough alone. Unless there is some resolution shortly I'm gong to blow this configuration away and reinstall up to the SP4 level again. The most painful part will be updating the client machines with installed agents.
