I have a 2000 IPS system that has a PIM holding 4 backup batteries that I will be replacing. Do I need to shutdown the PBX or can I just go ahead and replace the batteries?

You should be able to replace them without shutting down.

Just don't hook them up wrong. ;)

Just my 2¢

The book says to shut 'er down but the theory, and some real world experience says you don't have to. The reality is that if you plug in a partially discharged battery into a live power supply you WILL get a spark and worse case burn the connector or knock down the system.

Shut 'er down and be safe or take your chances. Up to you.

Must be a pretty messed up mains supply if you need to change the batteries on an IPS already. Why are they in need of changhing so soon?
