Hi, probably obvious question. Our tape backup drive has gone down, and before a new one arrives I'd like to backup file under one particular directory onto free space on a local network machine.
Running Solaris 8 on Sun.

Used ufsdump for tape backup previously, but can that (or other) be used for remote (network) backup?
I tried using partition names instead of tape drive name, ie
#ufsdump 0uf /dev/md/dsk/d21 remotemachine:/export/home/
and added local machine name to the remote machine's .rhosts file in root directory.

where am I going wrong, or is ufsdump not the best way to go?
I think the rhosts may not be working. Have I missed something?

Thanks,
Alun

ufsdump is for tape only, not network devices such as a hard disk.
just copy the contents of the files you want to the network drive. Klon Shugart

You can make a copy with ufsdump to a network disk.
The secret is ufsdump | ufsrestore.

ufsdump 0f - /source_directory | (rsh remote_host -l root " cd /target_directory ; ufsrestore xf - ")

If you need recover make de same process.
