Backorder Not Generated

We selected an order for billing and changed one item's qty to ship to zero. The invoice posted and the sales order moved to history but no backorder was generated. We deal with backorders frequently and this has never come up before. Any ideas?

Check customer file and item file. They both have flags for backorder (Y/N).

Both the item and the customer have the Backorder Flag checked.

Have either the customer or item been recently changed? The backorder flag is captured at the time of order entry, it does not read the current values of the customer's or item's backorder flag.

Are these non-inventory items? I do not mean non-stocked, I mean the item does not exist in the item master. If so this is your problem.

This is an inventory item that we sell thousands of a day. I tried recreating the issue with the same item/customer combo in a test company and it worked perfectly.

It worked as in the backorder was created? Or it failed the same way in both companies?

Try this several times. If you cannot recreate the issue there is not much that can be done.
