Have a problem on SBS 2003. Have exchange 2003 and whilst backing up mail folders with veritas I am recieving errors where access is denied to certain files.

These files are reported as being in use and are either located in a users inbox or deleted items store.

When visiting the affected users ,machines these items do not actually appear in the said folders.

Am new to exchange, believe the files contain viruses and are being locked by symantic.

How can I access these files to clear them so backups can return to normal?

When you say files - what type of files - are they priv.edb /priv.stm format. Or are you talking about normal attachments users send to each other.

If exchange server is running and you try to backup the edb / stm files it is definitely going to give an error.
That is the reason, there is an online agent which is available with these backup softwares.

But if you are talking about the mailbox level backup and certain attachments are being skipped or errored out then the following steps might help you.

You can use a utility called MFCMAPI, but with real caution. If you are not sure of how to use that utility check with tech support of MS.

Check the caveats given by MS on this.

Normal attachments.

I.E veritas errors say

Backup - \\server\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes Access denied to file mark smith[mark]?Top of Information Store?Inbox?Oh God it's.
Access denied to file mark smith[mark]?Top of Information Store Inbox?Mail Error <4195>.
Access denied to file mark smith[mark]?Top of Information StoreInbox?something for you.
Access denied to Access denied to file mark smith[mark]?Access denied to file James Smart[james]?Top of Information Store?Inbox?Re: Order.
Access denied to file James Smart[james]?Top of Information Store?Inbox?Re: Order.
?Inbox?Fetishes.
Access denied to file james smart[james]?Top of Information Store?Inbox?Mail Delivery failure - james@mycompany.co.uk.

There are many of these types of errors in only 2-3 users deleted items, junk files or sync folders. All other users are unaffected.

Although AV is running there is an excessive amount returned emails from 2 specific users in addition to multiple viruses arriving daily (100+ on a 20 user network)

Backups for specific users mail have been temporarily turned off till situation is rectified however files are very important and backups need to be back on urgently.

On thing you can try. Export the mailbox contents of these users to a PST file either using exmerge or Just using outlook and then delete the mailboxes and then Create a new mailbox for these users and import the content back after inspecting the contents.
