I've got several systems that we "maintain" that for one reason or another, the sites refuse to replace controller hardware that's going on 15 years old.

I've managed to perform backups using the method described in this thread link. - thank you JCCDM for your insight.

Hi cdpak,

I made this doco up last time I was hving the same issue. This is the process for backup without performing an upgrade:

Performing Back Up with Mitel Business Software Installer
1. Open up Mitel Business Software Installer.
2. Select the “3300 ICP” option.
3. Enter the log in details for the system
- Enter the IP address for the Controller.
- System Login ID for the Controller.
- System Password for the Controller.
4. Click on the configure button.
5. Choose to “Perform Full Install” but leave “Migrate SX-2000 Database” unchecked.
6. Under Full Install Configuration select the “3300 FTP Server”.
6-Alternate - MiVB Software installer 14.0.0.9/10 and 3300 version 7 - select External FTP server - use FTP server 127.0.0.1 and bogus FTP credentials... you will get a pop-up that asks to proceed - select YES.
7. In the 3300 Software location box, browse to find your FTP-Root Folder.
8. Click the Next button.
9. Under Backup:
- Choose a location to save the backup. Select the FTP-Root folder again and follow it with the file name. e.g. C:\TFTP-Root\SiteName_Backup_Date
- Select “Backup Call History records”
- Select “Backup Voice mail messages”
10. Make sure “Install software version [XX.X.X.XX]” is unchecked.
11. Under Help Files, make sure “Do Not Install” is the only one checked.
12. Make sure “License and Option Configuration” is unchecked.
13. Make sure “Database Restore” is unchecked.
14. Click the Next button.
15. Mitel Business Software Installer is now ready to backup, select the Start button to begin.
16. The system will advise you: The current configuration has completed successfully. Click OK.
17. Click the Done Button.
18. Confirm the backup has saved at your set location.
19. Close Mitel Business Software Installer.

Unfortunately, not all Mitel Software Installer Tools are created the same.
The older versions 3300 Software Installer Tool (release 6.0.1.15) does not work to back-up 3300 version 7 or 9 - appears to be a Java issue.
The MiVoice Business Software Installer Tool Version 14.0.0.12 does not seem to work for the above methods.
The MiVoice Business Software Installer tool Version 14.0.0.9 or 10 DOES allow for this on 3300 Release 9 - However, 3300 release 7, you must select the 6-Alternate (and this might not work).

Keeping an old Windows XP laptop handy also isn't 100% effective on the old systems... Make sure Java doesn't get updated.

I for one will be very happy when these sites get upgraded.... soon, I hope.

We have cut off some customers for this reason - advised them that they are on their own and we can no longer maintain their systems.

If I never did anything I'd never done before , I'd never do anything.....

I wish we'd cut off some of these customers. Heck, we still supported SX-50's and SX-100/200s until about 5 years ago.

What is the software release? The BACKUP routine has been the same for quite a long time.

I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, I'm just not going to suppose very hard.

There's a KB article from 2012 that's still out there on KMS if you have a MiAccess account. Basically on anything newer than IE8 there's a patched .jar file you need to FTP to a controller to get the Java applet that runs the backup & MOH uploads to play nice with IE. I've updated literally hundreds of systems with this. KB article 12-5191-00282, aka Document ID HO872 in KMS.

slight update... The one site I have with 3300 release 7 HDD failed on Monday and I had to resurrect it with 3300 release 9. With my Windows XP laptop, I'm able to do backups.

The best news is that I now have everyone's attention about this and we're set on getting them upgraded to supportable software versions and platforms... or switch them to hosted.

NYTalkin - you're correct in the process hasn't really changed over the years... however, this is too darn old of a system and newer computers will not communicate to it for backups to function.
