Hi,

I am using Arcserve 11.1 and for some reason whenever I try and back up the MDBDATA which are the folders that contain the PRIV1.EDB files and the Exchange Log Files it wont work.

It tells me it has completed the job successfully but when I go to do a restore it has created the directory structure but no files.

Cheers

Dave

Spooky, I've just asked the exact same question at the exact same time!

Hope someone can help us with this!

Hi,

Are you trying to backup the Exchange files as "flat" files or as a database...

You need to install the Brightstor Exchange agent in order to backup the exchange databases..

Else, if you want to back them up as "flat" files, you would need to install the BroghtStor Backup agent for open files, which would try to lock these open files (*.edb, *.log.. )for ARcserve to back them up.. However, there is a minimum time frame , for which these files have to be inactive for the Open file agent to be able to lock them for backup....

I would suggest that you install the Exchange agent..

Hope this helps

Cheers

I already have the Open Files Agent, but it's as if it doesn't even bother trying to back up the Exchange edb files and it gives a "Sharing Violation" error on the stm files. I found a post on this forum that said for ArcServe v9 there is a registry key called "SkipDSAFiles" which you could change to 0 to force it to backup the Exchange files. I cannot find this for ArcServe 11.1

I spoke to Technical Support yesterday (they eventually returned my call after I tried to contact them on Friday) and they said "can't be done with the open files agent unless the exchange services are stopped, you must get the Exchange agent". They went on to say that the disaster recovery option also cannot restore the Exchange database when the Exchange agent is used so you must restore this seperately afterwards.

V9 had a registry entry. I'm very curious to see if that etnry will work with V11 or not:

Here were the instructions for V9:
From: Cyklops (TechnicalUser) 3 May 04 12:02
Use the Registry Editor and go to the Client Agent key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Computer Associates\BrightStor ARCserve Backup.
In the client agent parameters there is a DWord value called SkipDSAFiles. This is set to 1 (skip files) by default. Set this value to 0 and ARcserve will backup the Exchange files.

And, I agree with Speshalyst that you need the Exchange Agent. I back up my edb both ways every night. I have, on occasion encountered an open file manager backup of the edb file not work. Something about a mismatch between it and the logs. Most of the time it does work though.

Good luck!
