Hey All,

I am trying to backup a windows 2003 Domain Controller in an AD environment, that is in a separate domain from my backup machine.
No success so far.

Here is what the log has:
Job ID........................ 222
Workstation................... FTLPDC01
Source........................ C:
Target........................ W-CAS-SAT- 3/13/04, ID F27E, Sequence #1
Session....................... 4
Start Time.................... 3/14/04 12:41 AM
E8522 Failed to receive data from the client agent. (EC=10060)
N5936 The following media can be used in device group XTRASLOT for next job on date 3/15/04:
N5941 1. <BLANK>

This is what we have done so far:

They have given my account on the backup domain local admin rights on that box.
They have made sure that the account has:
Log on local rights
Log on as service
Log on as Batch
Act as part of OS
We also tried using an admin account on the PDC domain. No luck.

I have installed the client agent on the PDC, all the services are running.

I can backup machines with 2003 OS from this new domain, but when it comes to the domain controllers, it fails.

I still think the issue is permissions related, but others don't.

Any recommendations, besides upgrading my backup software :)?

Thanks in advance
David

EC=10060 indictae there is network problem,
on Backup server from command line are you able to connectto remote win2003 server using NET command with both IP & hostname.

E8522 Failed to receive data from the client agent. (EC=10060)

From the message we know that it was able to connect to the client agent, and that at some point it lost the connection with the agent. The specific error is a WinSock error 10060, which is a generic error and of not much help.

What we do not know is:
How much is backed up before it errors out?
Does it get to the same point each time?
If the problem is network related?
or
If the problem is related to something at the target system?

As a test try the backup without the client agent.
If it works or does better, try configuring the client agent for low priority. (it usually reduces conflicts with other applications that way).
If there is a virus detection program running on the target try configuring it to scan incoming files only.
For network related problems a sniffer or network monitor is a good tool to use.

In the backup job do you use, under the agent when selecting tcp/ip, do you enter an Ip or do you tick computer resolution?

Hey All,

I appreciate the responses.
So far, i have tried the backup without the client agent, and it is backing up, but very slowly, about 30MB a minute.
I do backup with the host name and IP when using the agent.
I will check the NIC speed settings and adjust the priority to low next.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
David

@David,

i had the same error with one of our clients.
My solution was to check the NIC on the client and on the Switch. Both were set to different speed. I changed this both to 'automatic' and now everything works fine.

Hth,
Peter
