Is it possible if so how?

Filer has CIFS only.

Mount the share to a server and back them up over the network.

I thought it would be something like that. not the best method but we're only testing.

Check out the section on NDMP in this manual around chapter 6 it talks about CIFS

VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 5.1 Advanced Client System Administrators Guide for UNIX and Windows

Bob Stump
Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.

Hello,

It's possible.
I'm currently using this method at one of my offices. (We don't use NDMP there because of cost and architecture concerns).

Important things to consider:

- You have to use a regular client to connect to the NetApp through SMB shares (you can use UNC paths on the backup selection list in policies),

- I recommend using a Windows client because Linux clients under Samba aren't able to backup CIFS rights,

- On Windows clients, don't forget to run the NetBackup client Service with a service account which has rights to your filer CIFS shares.

- To optimize bandwidth, I suggest using a Netbackup Media Server as Netbackup client.

- If you consider using Snapshots on NetApp and backing up data from snapshots (no need to use Windows open File Option then), don't forget to switch the client incremetal method from Archive bit to timestamp. ;)
