background problem

I built a web page using a background gif.The gif was 1200 x 850, 3 base colors and some red lines on it. For three days it has worked fine. Today I checked it on the web and the background was missing, just showing a black background. I called up the corresponding page in DW and it shows the background as a grey square with a cross throgh it. So I checked the gif image in PSP7 and it is fine. Back on the web my background is either white, black, or busy rubbish. Everything else on the page is fine and working. I am totally lost. Can a background gif degrade somehow over time?
Any ideas appreciated.
PS. I have tried reloading the gif after checking it in PSP7, but it has not fixed the problem

I couldn't fix the problem so I built new backgrounds...so far so good, the problem has not returned. But thanks for offering.
