Hi guys,

I am running Novell Client 4.83 and ArcServe For Netware 6.1. For the last month or so our nightly backups haven't been storing everything that we ask them to.

We have around 17GB of data (90% of it being text and easily compressable) and we are using 125M/12GB tapes.

Compression is definitely turned on in the Device Menu.

Arcserve reports that back up has gone fine with maybe one or two files skipped (because they were in use), but when checking the tape not even half the files were backed up.

The Session Log reports no errors.

Even when doing a test backup of a small collection of files not all are backed up.

Any ideas?

Knowing Arcserve 6.1, I would suggest that all of the backed up files are not being merged into the Arcserve database properly. I would surmise that your backup is sound and that if you did a restore by query your files would be there.

What version of NetWare are you using (including Service Packs) and have you applied SP4 for Arcserve 6.1? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I tried restoring by going to the Restore window and selecting "Tree View" then finding the file and restoring from there. This didn't work as the program asked for the last successful backup (which was mid-September).

You mentioned a "Restore By Query". How do I try this?

On my machine I have Netware Client 4.83, the server has 4.11 (SP 9) and we are using ARCserve For Netware - Windows Edition Version 6.1 SP 1997.9.

Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Chris

Chris,

Here's an example of how to use query,

restore
query view (source arrow down)
begins with = mar02p&l
(hit) query button
the media to recover data from shown on right side
place media in appropriate drive
media view (source arrow down)
(double click) I-fast-tue-4/2/02 (id9824)
(double click) fast/sys:
(double click) pat
(double click) 2002 p&l
(select) green box next to mar02p&l.wb2 file
(select) destination tab
(check off) restore to original destination
(hit) run (stoplight button)
(select) job queue
note: to check the restore job progress

Curiouser & Curiouser....

After hitting "Search" on some keywords ARCserve goes through the search procedure and then comes up with

Bitrate error: 2 acessing file: <File Path & Name>
Attempting to: Get Less or Equal
I/O Error - This error indicates database corruption. check user manual for repairing corruption.

Obviously I replaced the actual path with <File Path & Name> in the above text.

Does this sound like the cause to the above problem. I'll have a go at fixing the database (depending on how easy it is - any comments?) tomorrow morning.

Thanx for your help so far guys,

Chris

Hi,
Firstly, my suggession is to have the tape scanned with the detailed log option.
This would give a fair idea about the amount of data backed up on the tape.
Also, did you compare the size reported in the activity log with the actual amount of data on the server?

Thanks

Ive tried Recovering Database but when I put the last successful backup tape in the drive I get the Error message:

E3187: Recover Database requires ARCserve Version 6 Database

We are definitely running Vers. 6 on the server, so what could the problem be?

ArcserveFreak I have just set the machine running a full scan of the latest "supposed" successfull backup. I will report on the out come tomorrow when it is complete

Thanx again guys.

I ran a full tape scan last night and it does indeed look like all the correct files have been backed up, they just don't display when I try to restore via the Media view.

Could this be because of a corrupt database? If so how do I get round the error in my previous post in this thread?

Thanx guys.

Hi Chris,
Yes, you are right. Its your database problem and not that the backup was incomplete.
Here we go.....

Have your database folder renamed and create a new "database" folder under sys:\arcserve folder.

After doing so, copy all the empty database templates from sys:\Arcserve\emptydb folder and paste them over to the new "database folder created.

Start Arcserve and do a merge of the tape once again. Try looking at the "restore by media" view to ensure all the files and folders are displayed.

Hope this helps!!!

Right I have followed your above instructions and am currently merging the database information from the last "successful" backup to the fresh ARCServe database.

Just to put my mind at ease this procedure doesn't actually replace the data on the system with what was on the last successfull back up does it? Just the database information, yes?

I only ask because when I look at the Session Proggress tab in the Job Information it is going through each file in the source window one by one as if it is restoring them. The only reasurring part is that in the destination window it says "N/A"...

please put my mind at rest that I am not putting the data on the system back by a month.

Your panickingly

Chris
