hello everyone,

I am an it intern and have run into an arcserve 2000 issue

As a test of the arcserve 2000 platform, i freshly installed the software and configured it.
I conducted a test a couple of days ago by running a full back up using the NOW OPTION.Everything worked well.

I used the GFS Scheduler to conduct a full back up last at approx 12:30 a.m..
I cam back this morning and read log and according to the software , the full back up was completed.
To see if this is true , i conducted a restore using the restore wizard to restore some spe files from the tape to another new file at another location.

Apparently there was only a back of the actual folder and folders with a folder, i have directory of folders , but no files within the folder.
When i configured the job, i made sure that all the greenboxes were full/solid , for all the folders and files within the folder.

I know time is precios in the it field, but i would greatly appreciate any help, suggestions , or possible solutions.

thank you all for any bits of information

Did you try to do a restore by session? If you did, and you are only seeing the folders, try merging the tape back into the database and then try the restore again. Let us know what happens.

hi thanks for your reply
I tried the solution recommended above, thank you for your time.
Unfortunately i am still having issues.
I know the following:
The tape works and the connection is good.
After merging i can see that were seven sessions created:
Seven sessions created, sessions 1,2,3,5 have been created , but only folders were backed up with no files.

Now get this, session 4 was backed up successfully, it is denoted as session 4 registry, lo and behold the computer with arcserve software installed had all of its registry backed up!!!
And session 6 & 7
Session 6 reads, something like:
session 6 Program files/computer associates/Arcserve/databases.......
Both session 6 and 7 were successful backups of the arcserve program!!!
what is wrong, i am at my wits end!!
thanks you for any suggestions you might have
thanks

As far as the files not showing up in the restore tree, you probably have it set to merge session information only. If you go into the modify job screen and click the "options" button on the tool bar there will be a tab called "operation". Go to this tab and look for a setting on what information to merge to the database. Make sure that "Merge detailed information" is checked. This merges the information on individual files instead of just directories. You will have to rerun the full backup for this to take effect. As far as it backing up the registry, it is an option under "My Computer" in the source section of your backup job. If you expand "My computer" it will be there along with all of the local drives on that machine. The other session is the Arcserve database. This option is once again in the modify job window and then the options window. On the operation tab there is an option to Backup Arcserve database. I'm not sure why it would back it up twice though. Let me know what you find out.

hello everyone
thanks for your replies.
I am implementing your suggestion tonite using gfs schedular and running the backup job after midnight.
I went to Arcserve backup , clicked on the top toolbar and clicked on the backup , then clicked on the options in the drop down menu. I then went to operation tab and clicked on the "RECORD DETAILED INFORMATION"
and unchecked "backup Arcserve database files ".
I hope this solution you guys provided me will work.
I will let you guys know tommorrow.
Thank for the generosity of your time and this great website.
thanks and i will let you know what happens.
thanks again

Hiya,
How do the other restore methods work? Restore by tree for instance, can you see files under there? Also, please make sure you are not using a filter to include all directories or something like that. One other thing, in the ACTIVITY LOG, how many Gigs is it backing up? Does it make sense compared to the data that is meant to be backed up OR is it a few KB for each session (i.e. the size of the foler only). This way you can see if you backing up the folders only or all the information.

I am using ArcServe 2000. When I try to modify a backup job it does not save the modifications. This is what I am doing: right click on the backup job, choose 'modify job', then from the 'backup' menu I choose 'options' and tick the 'Overwrite Media' option. I then save the arcserve.asx file. When I go back in to 'modify job' I see that the settings are as they were before: 'Append to Media'. I have tried changing other settings and these are not saved either.

Any suggestions please would be welcome!

Howdy,
Well, me thinks you should modify the job, then resubmit by pressing the little traffic lights, this will resubmit the job to the queue and any changes with it.
