Hello all:

I have read up a bit on the Backup Exec software 'cause we're planning to upgrade our existing backup exec 8.0 software so that it could backup the new SBS 2003 we're putting onto the network. I am just a bit confuse about the difference between BE v10.1 and BE v10d and was wonder if anybody could explain the difference and the usage of each version?

Would upgrading from our existing BE 8.0 to v10.1 be sufficient to backup SBS 2003 server? Another thing is that we don't have the media CD for Backup Exec 8 anymore. The entire server (hardware & software) was transferred over to us from another company who use to be part of the firm but they got dissolved. I do have the CDs of Backup Exec 8.5 Upgrade which were sent from Symantec. I also have the license keys for Exchange Agent for NT/2000, Open File Option, and the Remote Accelerator Agent.

If we purchase the BE v10 upgrade, would it install on top of the BE 8.5 Upgrade software (of which I have the software for?). Hope this make sense.

Our network consists of a backup exec server, NT/5.5 Exchange server and 3 windows 2000 adv file server. It's not a big infrastructure but definitely the layout will change again once SBS 2003 is introduce to the network. I will have to upgrade the backup exec server from NT to Windows 2000 OS. I have read a bit on Autoloader Agent, is this necessity when I upgrade the backup server?

Thanks!

Helen

First Backup Exec 10d/10.1 are the same. The "d" was designed for disk as a marketing tools.

10.1 will not run on NT 4 adn remote agent with NT 4 is best attempt when restoring.

If it were me I would completely remove Backu Exec 8.x and install 10.1 fresh and re-create jobs.

You kinda stuck in a license issue...are you planning to move the tape drive to the SBS server?

If not you would need Server license, Remote Agent license, Exchange license, and SQL if you using SQL on the SBS server. Now if you moved the tape device to the SBS server...you then would just purchse Symantec Backup Exec 10 SBS license..this can save you some money becuase it cheaper..then opt for remote agent licenses to backup the 2000 ADV servers.

Steve,

I really appreciate your response. I don't know if we're going to move the HP Autoloader 1/9 tape drive to the SBS box. I did not think of that yet! Our current backup exec server is an NT box attached to the HP autoloader 1/9 via a SCSI cable. What I can do is to upgrade the NT server to Windows 2000 server and install a fresh copy of the Backup Ex 10.1 Upgrade Edition on it and re-do the backup jobs.

I will have to check tomorrow with the Dell find out if there's going to be a slot at the back of the machine to accommodate a SCSI card. I would move the autoloader to the SBS server box if possible to save some money. Additionally I would really like to buy the upgrade version of Backup Exec 10.1 rather than buying the full license of the software. I never rather how expensive Backup software can be. Do you think we will run into any licensing issue if we ever get audit (knock on wood that we don’t) given the situation we’re in?

Would I have to install a version Backup Ex 8.5 if we get away with the licensing issue before it lets me install the Backup 10.1 Upgrade Edition software or would it let me install just the Backup Exec 10.1 Upgrade Edition alone?

Also, would you recommend purchasing Open File Option Agents for Windows 2000 Adv servers?

Thanks,

Helen
