[B]CPU at 100% and system freezes[/B]

Hi
I have a problem where if I run any (semi)CPU intensive process i.e. defrag, scan photo, resise image , virus scan, etc the cpu runs at 100% and the system freezes. The mouse and keyboard stops responding.
I am running an:
Athlon 2.2 ghz XP2800+
768 mb ram
Win XP SP2
NIVIDIA GEforce4 MX440 AGP8X
onboard sound.

I cannot infact defrag the system. it analyses. then stops and freezes. I have tried the windows defrag and a third party.
Any idea's
Any more info needed let me know

Try booting in safe mode and run check disk.

Could your system probably be overheating? if you have to turn it off to get it back it could be, check your fans,vents and probably the heatsink not seated right in this case.
