I installed XP Pro on my Home edition, but now only com port 1 shows on device manager, and my modem is on com3. The modem queries fine and is enabled, but in internet options it is not under dial up connections, and I am unable to add it (Error 711 is returned), and when I look at the event log, it returned saying access denied. I think this is my problem, but I can't fix it. Please help.

Error 711

A connection could not be established because a required service was not started on your computer. Make sure the following services are started on your computer and try again to establish the connection:

Plug and Play

Remote Access Connection Manager

For information about how to start a service, see To start, stop, pause, resume or restart a service in Help and Support.

Are there any unknown devices listed in Device Manager, and is your modem listed in Device Manager?

Internal Modems are nearly always COM3, they are not listed under Ports, but listed under Modems in Device Manager.

What other errors do you have in the Event Viewer? Perhaps you need to reinstall your Modem drivers.

linney, thanks for responding,
first of all, the plug and play service and telephony service are running. I tried to start the Remote Access Connection Manager and the Remote Access Auto Connection Managers, both with their own errors. first the RACM gave me error 5: Access Denied. The RAACM returned error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

In the Event Viewer the RACM had the following events
source event
RasMan 20035
Service Control Manager 7035
Service Contorl Manager 7036
Service Control Manager 7023

the Auto one had the same four events followed (on top) by one more event

Service Control Manager 7001

I'm guessing the XP Pro version I downloaded wasn't as up to date as my home edition, but I no longer have the home edition cd :(

I'm guessing the XP Pro version I downloaded...."
Is this from MSDN?

thanks again, I finally found I had to use regedit to delete a couple of registry keys in my rasman service folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26
