I have some trouble with a 10GB HD with W98 that every now and then needs a hard reset because mouse and keyboard don't work at all.
The other day I say, by accident, in the AVG (Grisoft Anti Virus) results that the boot sector showed an error.

Q1) Can that be the problem for not activating the keyboard/mouse?

Q2) Does anybody know a little free program to repair this? (Preferably without re-format and re-install W98)

I already tried SFC from MS but does not do the trick.

Thank for the help.

Use scandisk as well; no bad sectors at all!

This must look stupid but I just found out that this AVG message is of no meaning and already detected by Grisoft.

Anyway, I also tried the HD in an other computer and the problem wasn't solved by this action.

PS. my local time now is 22.20 so I can't reply instandly to anybody.

Can't see why boot sector issues would freeze mouse keyboard. But the 2 ways to refresh boot sector info in 98:-

Boot from win98 boot floppy (or to a dos prompt from 'safe mode' menu.
Master Boot Record - run fdisk /mbr
Boot sector - run sys C:

98 is notorious for producing freezes for no obvious good reason - reinstall often fixes. If persists after clean install, then I'd start checking hardware (RAM first suspect, but any bad hardware can cause freezing)

Before doing a clean reinstall, try a different mouse and/or KB.
I once had numerous problems with freezing in Win 98, and without any thoughts of troubleshooting the problem I replaced the existing corded PS/2 mouse with a cordless one simply for the convenience of the cordless feature, and the freezing stopped. Talk about stepping in poop!
