Avaya Remote Management

Hi All -

Recently inherited an Avaya phone system that is physically 2 hours away from me. Luckily, I have reliable remote access and an outsourced PBX vendor for emergencies. I work with Mitel primarily so Avaya is new to me. With Mitel, I can easily setup a phone remotely within 3 minutes if I have all the information (Extension, user info, MAC, etc). Is this possible with Avaya? I imagine it is but I am posting to find out the easiest, quickest way. My main goal is to remotely manage as much as possible without having to touch the phone or require staff to push buttons for me.

Any other tips will be greatly appreciated. Also, any useful trainings that anyone know of for Avaya would be great!

So long as you have a Windows-based machine on the same network you can install IP Office Manager or use the web-based Management interface (so long as it's a new enough version, 9.1 or above I think). Not many people use the actual handsets to administer the PBX these days, and it's a very limited set of things you can configure anyway.
We manage a number of systems remotely using Windows VMs mainly, pretty much all configuration is done via the PC Manager.

This is assuming it's an IP Office, is it an olive green box or a big grey box?

personally we try to use an ISDN data connection direct t the IPO whenever possible
failing that a VPN connection
remote desktop to a PC on site is our last choice when nothing else is available

Yes, IP Office 10.1. I found a few things that I could do remotely but not register a phone.

On 10.1 you can do H323 phones but will need to forward the necessary ports through the firewall, or you can do VPN phones but then you need an IPSec compatible firewall that works with Avaya VPN phones.

On R11 the new Jseries phones can be configured as TLS over the internet using DES and these just require 443 being open to the internet so the phone can get the correct files from the IPO (they also need certificates and a bit more setup than a normal H323 phone) to allow you to register it.
