Here is some information for everyone trying to get a Partner ACS system working with an external/remote modem.

I just installed a new Partner ACS 7.0 with an external US Robotics Sportster 56K modem for Remote Administration

Based on information from Avaya and others you must configure the modem first.

1. Connect a straight through serial cable from your PC serial port to the 25 pin serial port on the modem.
2. Open Hyperterminal on your PC
3. Set switches on modem with 3/7/8 down, all others up, turn on modem.
4. Make sure you can communicate with your modem. Usually the baud rate is between 1200 or 9600 N/8/1.
5. Make sure the modem will respond to AT commands, (type AT, then press ENTER, you should OK as the reponse)
6. After communication is established to the modem type the following commands exactly as shown: at&f0q1e0s0=3&n0&w0
7. At this point the modem will no longer respond to your PC commands.
8. Turn off modem.
9. Set switches 4 & 8 down, all others up.
10. Connect modem to either dedicated line, or dedicated extension.
11. If using a dedicated extension – program that extension so that all outside lines do not ring to that extension and also set Automatic Line Selection. (Page 3-14 and 5-2 in 7.0 Manual)
a. Feature 00
b. Left Intercom twice
c. Right Intercom once
d. Enter modem’s extension number
e. The green lights next to the line buttons show the ringing status. Press each line buttons to set all to no ring, the green lights will flutter.
f. Right Intercom once
g. Enter Modem’s extension number
h. Dial **
i. Right Intercom once
j. Left Intercom once
k. Dial ** again
l. Feature 00
m. This completes line Automatic Line selection
12. Connect modem to Admin port using a straight through cable such as a standard Ethernet cable. Plug the straight through cable into a 25 pin 355AF which is plugged into a null modem adapter (Radio Shack 26-1496) which is plugged into the modem serial port. Turn on modem and test software.
13. The trick is the null modem and the commands setting in the modem. My desktop PC, (Running WinXP SP2 and an Intel 536EP PCI modem) connects at about 21600 consistently, however, my HP laptop modem will connect to modem, but will not start the session. Issue with the laptop modem I suppose. It will work on a direct connection, however.
14. To save the $8 on the null modem you can make your own 25 pin null modem Avaya adapter that will connect the modem directly to the Admin port.

25 Pin Male Adapter – null modem version for connecting directly to external modem

1 Blue 22
2 Orange 4 & 20
3 Black 6 & 8
4 Red 7
5 Green 2
6 Yellow 3
7 Brown Not used
8 White Not used

Here is the standard 355AF pin outs if you want to make these as well. These adapters are used to connect you PC serial port directly to the Admin port on the ACS. Material costs $5-10 at an electronics store.

1 Blue 22
2 Orange 5 ,6, 8
3 Black 20
4 Red 7
5 Green 3

Mod Plug 9 pin Avaya 355AF

1 Blue 9
2 Orange 1, 6, 8
3 Black 4
4 Red 5
5 Green 2
6 Yellow 3
7 Brown Not used
8 White Not used

Hope this helps everyone who is pulling their hair out over trying to connect remotely. I hope how soon Avaya gets the ethernet port on these units working. Obviously if you are trying to use a different type/brand external modem, the modem commands will be different; you will have to try that on site, or the work bench on your own.

Thanks to all who made previous posts on this subject!!!
