I was just hired as system administrator at a new company. They have an Avaya ip office system. They currently have an Algo 8180 setup with loud ringer. They want me to change it so they are able to use it as an intercome. It does currenly work for loud ringer. I am unable to get it to work for an intercome. I did disable the ringer. The algo web interface does say successful for page once I disable ring since they only have one SIP license. All I did was change the ring extension to the page extension but it will not work.

It was setup to ring. When a call is made it rings in the factory. If I dial 3500 the ringers does ring in the factory. So I changed the page extension to 3500 and diabled ring. Now it does say successful on the Algo site for page when it did not before the change. But when I dial 3500 now it does nothing. What else needs to be done so I am able to voice page out of the Algo 8180.

When I do dial 3500 you can hear the page tone that is setup on the Algo web interface but after that nothing. It does not broadcast the speech over the speaker.
I tried to create a new usetr and extension but nothing worked. So I went back to just changing the ring extension to the page one.

I also found somewhere to uncheck "allow direct media path" under the VOIP tab for the extension but that did nothing also.

Is the Also set to External speaker, or Internal? What is the volume set to? Is it registered in SSA? Do you see it answering when you dial it?

Depending on the software version of the IP Office you may need to add "SIP_ALLOW_PAGE" to the No User Source Number. Have you called Algo support? They answer the phone with a real human and are very helpful.

yes it answer. It will make the noise that I set as page tone. On the ALGO web interface it under SIP registration it does say successful. When I call 3500 it makes the page tone and looks like it answers but then nothing happens if I speak.
Speaker mode is set as auto.
Speaker Mode Auto External Internal Disabled I have auto checked
I put volume up to the max 10

I have IP office 9.1.7 build 163

I just used the user and extension that was being used for the ring that did work with the ALGO. I just changed the ring extenstion to the page one within the algo web interface. after that change the status does show successful

Do I need a current contract to call ALGO? No I have not called
update I called and left a message not answer treid two times

I don't have and unable to create an Avaya account. it ask for customer number that I do not have.

In the Extension "VOIP" tab go to "3rd party Auto Answer" do you have "device auto answers" selected from the drop down?

You mention both paging and intercom - the Algo can operate as a supersensitive hands free phone, it just needs a simple call and it will answer - for that you don't need the "3rd party auto answer" setting on the IP Office - that comes in when you want to add it to a paging group with other phones.

Given that you say that the simple call is not working there seems to be a network issue.
Disabling direct media is a poor solution, but sometimes a good diagnostic.

What is between the Algo in the factory and the IP Office and the extension you're calling from? any VPN, routers, firewalls, etc.?
Chances are that there's something that is allowing the SIP signalling through (hence it working historically, and the call seeming to work, and even the page tone), but not the RTP audio, which is on different ports.

The Algo 8180 is a lovely device, it can do lots of cute stuff ( you can have the night bell operation back, no need for dual registration - it can use BLF signalling), it's well built (it *feels* good, and suitably hefty for an audio product), and the admin is pretty easy to use. I must go down to the lab and re-acquaint myself with it...

The phones and the ALGO are in the same building but the IP office is at another location. They are connected with a VPN tunnel. At the main location there is a cisco ASA 5506 and at the factory their is a asa 5505. There is a IPsec tunnel connecting the two locations but all ports are open between the two locations

I also just found this in the ALGO interface
Different Ports for Extensions
Enabled Disabled
Turn this option on for certain proxies, e.g. Cisco Communication Manager 7, to send ring and page SIP requests through different port numbers.

and it is disabled just to let you know

Do I need to open anything within the IP office manager?

I just tried the auto answer did not help

Does anyone have any other ideas. I have worked with ALGO but they say it must be in the IP office and nothing they can help me with

Thanks All

It's a bit of a mystery.
I think you've said that the phones and the Algo are all on the same piece of network kit, though all the phones in question are connected to the remote IP Office via VPN etc..
I assume you can call between those phones and get the audio, and the signalling works (and the admin web UI) - so it doesn't really add up.

I can't come up with any suggestions - sorry

IT feels like an RTP/network issue - I was expecting the Algo and the phones to be on different VPN devices - there are well known issues there - but usually disabling direct media makes it 'work' so its a good pointer to sort the network.

We had this same issue a while back with a Cyberdata speaker after a firmware update. It would play the page tone but not the audio. We we had to change the DTMF support in the extension VOIP tab to Inband for the audio to come through.

I did get it to work. I don't even want to say why it was not working because I am very dumb. That is basically why? The page tone even says "Use only "page-notif.wav", or custom uploaded file. The other pre-installed tone files all contain silence at the end in order to generate ring "cadence" of 6 seconds. This silence will block the voice path for several seconds at the start of a page." but it was not set to that and I was not smart enough to read. So when I set it to none is when I finally realized that was the reason the whole time.

After all this work to get it working they say it is not loud enough so without installing more they would rather have it on ring.

Thanks all for help

You can add a horn to the 8180 they are pretty inexpensive

Joeny - have a star for your fault-finding skills and more importantly reporting back.
Glad you've got it working.
Now if you want to add it to a page group of other phoens there are pointers already given
