avaya G350 access

I am trying to login to a G350 to do a Firmware update. I am logging in via modem and get a prompt of:
2.6.18-53.AV17PAE login: At this prompt I am typing Login as "Root" and Password as "Root" or "rootroot" Should I be connecting to the port on the G350 directly, or should I be able to access the G350 via dial as I am doing? None of the login and passwords are working using the dial up connection.
